American Dub. Couple questions.

Mad Max was distributed by American International, I think. Not one of the bigger studios, but more of a B-movie supplier. More lowbrow, drive in theater, double feature oriented. Think Death Race 2000, not Gone With The Wind...

So these guys decided that they'd get this 'foreign' low budget sci fi action flick and redub it for the blue collar audience and teens, not the snooty art house crowd. They figured this 'less educated' demographic wouldn't understand the accents. I forgot who said it, maybe P.T. Barnum, but nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Mad Max was intended as a quick money maker that would sink out of sight after it's limited release over here. But it turned into a cult classic, and the studio that picked up Mad Max 2 decided that if the sequel was worth doing, it should have the accents. No REAL studio releases dubbed films to an American audience. So MM2 was done in Aussie. MM1 was released in original dialogue over here only after the wonders of DVD technology enabled, and demanded, additional features like alternate tracks.

Except for the bootleg VHS copies one could find around. I actually have a PAL Aussi original VHS tape as well, but never bothered to get it converted, as I found a bootleg for way less than the conversion would have cost.

The person that sent me the PAL original said that they store owner laughed themselves onto the floor when she asked him if "It had the original Australian dialog". He said that almost everybody asked him that when they bought the copies. I guess a lot of Americans found the store, near Sydney on vacation (Mary is Aussi mind you, and lives and works near Sydney). I guess now that the DVD is out, his sales will have dropped drastically.

Yeah, I picked up the bootleg VHS from the British release around '95 or so. Kinda grainy and all, but well worth the widescreen and dialogue.

I think Fifi IS Pops Racer...

That would be a great crossover - Speed Racer in the Mad Max universe.

Ever notice in the Italian dub of MM2, Max says 'gracius' (thank you) to Warrior Woman after she says "I was wrong about you, I'm sorry". Now in the original track Max doesn't say anything, but opens his mouth as if to say something but doesn't.

Hi all,was in USA for a while last year and in an Arizona vidoe store MM1 was for hire.Had to get it,feeling homesick,and after"Big Boppa to March Hare"couldn't stop laughing at the dubbd US version.

Actually bought a DVD of MM1 at WalMart with "The Original Australian Version" for $15.00 .

Heh, glad you enjoyed it. Nothing compares, though, to the laughter I spewed when Jessie shout's "OY!" to Max in the Aussie version.

It's completely backwards from the "YO!" which was popular here in the 80's. I delight in the differences; not the least bit put off by them.

A fairly common Aussi utterence, isn't it? Similar to the Yiddish/Jewish usage of Oy, but slightly different meaning, the Yiddish kind of like "Wow!" the Aussi more like "Hey!".

Yeah but the line 'The chain in those handcuffs...' has got to be the most hilarious dub moment :p

As for 'OI', yeah, pretty common around here and I think it sounds a little less corny then "YO" but that's just my opinion.

We've always yelled "oi" around here too.

I only heard the american dub once and so didn't remember that part. How wierd to dub over such a little thing. This dub is so cocked up.

'Oi' was kind of a skinhead thing for awhile, so maybe it was dubbed for that reason? More likely due to it not being a common American expression.

I always thought it was a British/Empire thing. Soccer (football) cheers and all that...

"Oi, Oi, Oi!!"

I could see Johnny the Boy saying "Yo Yo Yo, I gots mad skillz, yo?" I say get Eminem to play the next incarnation of Johnny...
