Again, it's a movie that is not 'bad' as much as it isn't 'good'. When you think about the amount of money spent (it did look really good) and the fact that Burton was involved, you would think they could have come up with something truly unique. But they didn't. The only thing "Burton-ish" about it, was the similiarity of the leaping monkeys to the first Batman movie, and very tenuous, at that. Soundtrack is worth getting. Oh, and the resemblance between the lead female chimp (can't for the life of me remember the character or the actress's names) and Michael Jakson. Uncanny!
Good 50's movies (terribly subjective, I know, but these are the ones that, for the time, were actually decent movies):
"On The Beach" (one of the possible inspirations for Mad Max. Might have been early 60's, but I think it was late 50's
"This Island Earth" (Gotta love the Metaluna Mutants and the 'Interocitor')
"Forbidden Planet" (Leslie Nielsen (Police Story, Naked Gun), Earl Holliman (Police Woman)
"When Worlds Collide" (Great book. There was a sequel to the book but not the movie. The colonists were not the first race to inhabit the new planet)
That's all I can think of right now. For an interesting time, watch "Planet of Vampires", "Vampire Planet", whatever it's listed as. It's 60's Italian, so it's dubbed. Loved it as a kid, very creepy. I think it provided inspiration to Carpenter for "Ghosts of Mars". And I would swear one of the dubbing voices was the same guy that did either "SpeedRacer" or Max in "Mad Max", can't remember which.

You notice how the shots of people around the world waiting to see how the mission is going looked just like Mastercard/Visa and Chevy truck commercials?Quote: Originally posted by rockatansky4073 on 08 February 2003

They had some great sci-fi to compare to in the 50's. How about King Kong from decades before? The 50's produced some terrific flicks, (Forbidden Planet is simply amazing considering it came out in'57, and is still truly entertaing today. One of the few that is still an un-copied original.) and it had some that were AWFUL, some of the worst sci-fi ever. Just like the 80's, those that really put effort into it, still shine today.
And I'm a sucker for "guy in a rubber suit" giant monster / radioactive insect flicks. Some bad movies are a lot of fun.
