Original Interceptor in Miami

Post by Anklecranker »

I made the trip to see the Original Interceptor at the Dezer Museum last Sunday. I left at o'dark thirty to cross the Everglades from the Gulf side of Florida. The drive took about 4 hours. The museum is in North Miami. This buildings are huge. The collection is immense. James Bond fans would faint. The 007 section even has a full size Jet and a Russian tank from the movies. Even some Range rovers from the 2012 Bond flick have arrived.

The musuem was almost empty of people. I was able to spend a full hour alone with the Interceptor. I was careful not to touch anything. Cameras were everywhere. A "manager" guy would walk through occassionally, but he knew nothing about the car. He didnt even know it is from Australia.

I was a little shocked at the condition of the car. It was once restored back a very shiny appearance. There had been a great effort to restock Max's supplies like the Dinki Di case and can. The area that housed the car was dimly lit with warehouse type flourescent lights. There was a huge carousel with hundreds of lights that overpowered many photos. I took my time and made many pics. Several reveal cracks, dents, scuffs, pealing bondo, rust, etc. It appears much of the "damage" occured after the restoration before it went to Cars of the Stars in Keswick, England.

The interior was close to the condition as seen in the Road Warrior. I could not see a gas pedal for some reason. The roll cage was more extensive than I had first thought. The tires on the front were 14's? I expected 15's. The rear tires were 265/50/15. I'm quite these were 295's during filming. The blower casing is a Cragar? Eh? The twin fuel tanks were painted shiny black at some point. I seem to remember the 'resoration' before COS, had the tanks in flat black-that would have looked better. The headlight covers have been 'corrected' to clear pieces with gold grills. I took several pics of the support braces underneath. The headlights lookd asif they had been underwater for a long time. There is some kind of 'voodoo' head strapped to the dash. Not sure where that came from.

The time was special. To actually see and experience the real car was amazing. I have driven replicas and Falcons several times.

This.........was an event like no other. If you can....go see it.

ENVIOUS. Wish I was there with ya!

Thank you so much for sharing, and for making the trip in the first place.

That place is on my bucket list, and I'll make there someday!

The voodoo head was on the dash in MM2. Wish I would have known you were heading over. I'm in Bradenton...

No pictures of the dash board? Amazing you can walk right up to it, no ropes or anything and stick your head inside.

Driver's seat was in good condition or reupholstered?

The seat appears to be the original. It has the same split down the middle as seen in COS pics and just before that time. Now the split has gained a little width.

Mark and Jon,

I have more pics, you know how detailed I am.

Some museums do this indeed, strangely enough.
When I was in Turin Italy in July this year with my Bertone X1/9 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the car with members of all the X1/9 clubs from across Europe, We went to the car museum in Turin.
At the moment also a lot of the (concept) cars of Bertone where exhibit there to celebrate 100 years of car design by Bertone.
Almost nothing was behind ropes. You could walk around the cars and look inside of them.
This way I managed to take some pictures of the underside of the Bertone Runabout concept car.
But there was a tight surveillance. There where some people of the museum walking around and probably camera observations.
A few times there where taped announcements played over a P.A. system in Italian and English that said not to touch the cars. So they where watching us.

"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

Hey ankle long time no type!

Was beginning to worry that the car wasnt the orginal due to a few differences I noticed.
The damage to the front flare and spoiler is a bit disappointing too.

after seeing ankle' pics than he've sent me ( Thanks mate ), i see on this pic than the VIN is : JG66RV043660K .... as a 74 model !

But, wasn't a 73 model first ?

in my favorite mag " australian muscle car", in the good issue #55, i have read than the VIN of the original car was : JG66ND43660K, as a Nov 73 model !? I remember of that because my XB is JG66ND4566K, so just a difference of 1 digit .... :D ( funky for a Mad Max enthusiast i have thought )

In the past, when i was 20, ( and seen the car at Paris museum ), i have read than the car was a 73 model too !

So, what do yo think about that ???????? I feel the fake or what ? :geek:
