Greatest Memory

For the benefit of those who were not there and for those who may have missed some of the memorable events I want to start a thread that includes the best memories from back2themax. If you are lke me you may have to post several times.

I will never forget standing out the front of the cinema in Broken Hill waiting to watch Mad Max 1& 2 on the big screen when I heard a rumbling sound that grew louder and louder. V8's. Then around the corner came Scott's Landua, yellow interceptor and MM2 Style black interceptor. The sight of those three vehicles on suburban streets will live with me forever.

Memories? ....hmmm... where to start?! For me it proved to be one of those weekends that'll stay with me for a very long time. It felt like we managed to fit about 10 days worth into 2 and a half!

Visiting the various locations proved to be pretty cool.. seeing the replica cars was excellent.. seeing the wrecked interceptor... there was just SO many factors.

But honestly, without wanting to sound like a w**ker, the fact that I got to hook up with people that before the weekend had just been names on the forum - and get together to share our common interest, proved to be one of the main highlights. Sprogo, Nelson, DaveH, DaFax, MeMax, Gary Myers, Scott, Peter (and anyone else - don't take offence if I haven't listed your name) - it was just a real buzz to meet people from all corners of this bloody amazing country, and share a bloody amazing weekend.

The greatest memory was the group photo in the Club with the whole place stopping.

Kim Noyce getting emotional was a pretty special moment as well.

As per Wrinkles post above, Meeting all the fans from this forum (plus a few others as well was an incredible buzz. Visiting the sites was a bizarre sort of treasure hunt where you are searching for 20 year old ghosts. Yet inevitabaly you come away satisfied.

A priceless moment, Standing in the club, a bloke walks over to me, and says "I hear your dave h, Im Wrinkles..."

Funny story No. 1

I was looking for a bald guy (wrinkles) who I hadnt met. Feeling like I already knew him and his wicked sense of humour I walked up to this bald, seven foot, 120kg (about 260 pounds for our mates in the States) guy and said, G'day wrinkles. He turned around and looked like he was going to squash me, " what did you call me! "

As my feet wouldnt move I decided to tell him the story. Lucky he also had a sense of humour. I didnt search again for wrinkles. Thanks to Dave H for introducing us as I wasnt going through that again.

I was great to put some faces to the names on the board. There was so much going on that we need a back2themax re union - re union so we can catch up and have more beers together....a great bunch of blokes. I hope Peter has had that video camera surgically removed as it appeared attached to his face the whole weekend

well guys 16 h trip home fog roo's emu's nut off air cleaner wire off starting motor but f**k it was all worth it thanks heeps. dave the video is funny P.S WAS ONLY 12H TO GET THERE

We went home at 10.30pm Sunday and hit two roos damaging the front end and one roo suicided into the drivers door. $550 later, for the excess, still the weekend was worth it. Lucky it was a rental, but we should have listened to the advice we were given to travel in daylight. Fools, we now know for next time. Took us 15hrs from Sydney to BH through Mildura and 16hrs to come home the same way. We didnt stop as often or as long on the way home....except for examining the damage.

Re Sprogo's video moment, I feel the story has to be told.

Driving in a convoy out the dirt road to the pinnacles, Sprogos starts fishtailing his ute on the soft shoulder of the road. I pull up next to them after they nearly roll their ute and say "Hey, whats happening???"

"Just kids having fun"

So we offer to film them a bit. Im assuming the eventual footage is of an old ute fishtailing and lurching all over the road finally swapping ends meanwhile two unseen people in the filming car behind are laughing their heads off.

Another special Moment was going to the pinnacles and at the refinery site meeting the logistics manager from the film. He was like the great sage on the hill; everyone was silently and reverently gathering around one man in the middle of the desert to hear his every word. He told a lot about the cars, the compound and gave an insight into the nature of the filming, script development and how George Miller & Byron Kennedy interacted.

Took us 2 days (about 12 hours all up) to get there with stops at Mermaids cave and Bathurst for a lap around Mt Panorama racing circuit.

On the way home stopped for a night at White Cliffs Opal mining town and another night at Parkes to see the Radio Telescope 'Dish'.

Nelson, sorry to hear about your Roo story. Did you get any photos of the damaged car? Nearly hit about 2 roos after dusk on the way out. Several stupid emu's and sheep charged at the car on the way home. I believe that there were probably more than 350 dead roo's and emu's lying on the side of the road between Cobar and Broken Hill. The finest example was a particularly huge feathered specimen on the road out to South Australia lying smack bang in the centre of the road.

I wonder what the Japanese MFP couple thought of so many oddly inert examples of the native fauna?

I know, some of my mates were not big max fans and wanted to get out, I learned my lesson, told them not to go but power of numbers. No one hurt is the big thing. Next time Ill go with die hard fans.
