Mad Max 2 BD color timing

Post by Uncle Entity »

Call me crazy, but I think the blu-ray edition got it RIGHT, I don't remember the picture being so reddish and warm on my old VHS and countless TV screenings... so I'm one of the many people thinking the DVD got it wrong while the BD got it right!
They just used to boost colors on DVD to make it feel like an "improvement" of some sort.

Maybe europe is dull and overcast, but the outback i know is bright and sharp. the images on the left look better. they look like the real thing. no doubt semmler used filters on his cameras, but all cinematographers do. then in editing the color match is used to ensure a consistent feel across the whole movie. id rather it bright and realistic than dull and unrealistic.

Yup the red on the left looks more recognisable as "outback Australia" then the plain dry look of the images on the right.

It also makes it apper more "hostile" in a way

Frankly, I prefer the left image, because that looks like a "generic" post-apocalyptic desert, almost unrecognizable. Metaphorically speaking, it works better and looks far more depressing.

Not only does the left image look better It looks more Blu-ray than the right image.

Like many others....having been to that exact location, I agree that the left image looks better

The images on the left look more like 'Australia' to me. The warm reds contrasting against that blue sky, a good example of this would be the film 'Walkabout'. The pictures on the right just look like an overcast day here in England.

I saw MAD MAX 2 on big screen some weeks ago, and I'm definitly sure that the original colors are exactly like on the Bluray disc. Definitely less red than I used to see on my DVDs...

I have just purchased the Blu-ray version of The Road Warrior here in New Zealand and upon viewing
it, the movie has been "altered" somewhat in the color timing but in my opinion not as bad as in
the pictures above. I made a comparison on my LED TV to my standard DVD version of the film and
the color differences was only slight.

However, the night and dawn scenes are altered a lot and are much brighter than earlier versions,
eapsecially in the night trek from the compound and the later scene where Max leaves in his car.

Good points of the Bluray:
- The original "Mad Max 2" logo is used at the start.
- Sharper images / sound overall.
- Great audio commentary track.

Bad points:
- Warner Bros. logo has been updated, not the original 1981 version.
- Two bad sound differences:
Where the screen goes from 4:3 into the opening chase in widescreen the
sound of the superchrger "cuts in" as opposed to "fades in". A little jarring.
The line "let the dog go!" from max is barely audiable.
- Some color timing issues in places but don't let this stop you buying a copy.

I noted also various box covers here in NZ:
- Some box covers only have "The R.W." logo on them.
- Others have "MM2" added above "The R.W." title on the box and its this
version that contains the sound issues.

I also purchased the original film as well, it was all good except for some
reason I cannot get it to play the U.S. dubbed version of the soundtrack
even though it can be selected from the menu??

Nice, yes, the australian desert is reddish, the DVD got it right, and the Blu-ray does not. It appears to have a grey veil on all the image, and also a greenish tint.

It's the same for MM1 on Blu. The colors look drab.

Something interesting to note is the Pal 16/9 MM1 DVD is the same print as the Blu, but color timed correctly. If you sync the Blu-audio to the Pal converted to NTSC picture, the whole movie is exactly in sync. I know, I made my own rip of both, using the Pal DVD in a mkv set to read the picture a 23,976fps instead of 25fps, and synced all existing audio variations from both the US Blu-ray and the european DVD, so that I can watch it with the correct color and all the right sound options, and it plays perfect :)
