Our Master Blaster

Post by Rotton »

Hey all, ocasionally check out this site, big fan. Well for Hallows this year I convinced 10 other people to all do Mad Max themed gear. I had a hand in building most of them, I had a busy few months! I built the little Master, and most of Blaster, including the helmet, what a pain! I m not the one wearing it.. Thought you guys might like to see some pics. This is not 100% screen accurate, but a pretty good version I think! I know, it needs the horsetail, left it off to avoid getting grabbed! Have more pics, and some build pics if interested. and some of the rest of the crew, maybe another thread? anyway, here are some pics:

Wow, that is awesome! I'd love to see your build pics. How DID you make the helmet anyway? What did you use for the other armor?

Great work!

And how did it go over at the party?

Great job! Very few people have ever done a Blaster costume, and this one is EXCELLENT!
What part of the world do you live in? We'd love to see this worn at Wasteland Weekend 2012...

Yes it's a cabbage patch .. seemed an appropriate choice, everyone loved the little Master!

I hammered the helmet in bartertown, of course! Ok maybe not.. Most of the rest is leather. I can send some pics your way HUMVEE of the build if you'd like. We went to a 1000 person event of crazy costumers at a local show venue. We didn't gear up for a contest, but when we got there we entered and won best group! "Who run Bartertown?" All night! And we had a Max, gyro pilot, and a warrior woman. The rest were just the general look, a couple mohawkers.
Thanks for the compliments, I must have paused the Blaster scenes a million time trying to see every angle. We live in Seattle, Wa., not too far from Cali..

We get some Pacific Northwesterners that come down for WW. Maybe you could caravan. You've got plenty of time to think about it as it will probably not be until Oct. 2012 (no official date announced yet).

Feel free to post build pics here too, I bet we'd all like to see them.

Ok It took a bit trying to get the dome together. First made a simple cardboard template to figure out a size.
Image
I used styrene, cut heated to shape, then rivited. That is a real simple way of saying I spent hours trying to get the plates all lined up and fit with each other!
Image
Image
Cut out ears, and glued in screen material, painted black.
Image
Did all the final rivits and added top band and rings.
Image
Then made neck with vents part out of styrene, same diameter as dome.
Image
Don't have any pics of making the 2 lower shoulder/chest rings, but took the softer type foam pipe insulation, added the harder type pipe insulation of a smaller diameter inside bigger ring. Then basically sewed the 2 foam pieces together where the seams were. Added some stiff wire in the 2 tubes, then bent it to shape over his shoulders til' it fit and looked right, then sewed ends of pipes to each other. Here's a mock up:
Image
Had to cut out curves from lower neck vent piece to lower down over shoulders into the foam rings. Drilled holes along the bottom line of that part, then sewed to foam. All the sewing is using saddle stitching btw, pretty tough stuff. Drilled holes near top edge of lower neck vent piece, sewed a strip of leather around it, so dome slides into that leather strip, basically sitting on top of the lower neck piece.
The rest of it is basically cutting long leather strips and adding buckles for straps. The ones through the foam were slid between the stitching. I came up a fake buckle look, with magnets. so when it's on, it loooks like the dome is really strapped down, but can easily remove dome!
Image
The ab piece and arm are all made out of leather as well. It was a lot of work and time to figure out, sounds like it was real easy when I read through this! Also a lot of fun building him and the other ones I built.
Thanks for the interest!
