Bearclaw Mohawk's Mask?

Post by Wildwose »

Hello folks.
New on the boards, my first post. Introduction is in order.

I imagine I am like a lot of the fans here, I am one of the generation that grew up with the Mad Max Films. I will turn 40 this year and I can't quite say how many of times I have seen them. Lots. I recently came across the fan community and was very pleased to discover the events and creativity of it all. I am really pleased to see the franchise continue. Being a regular part of the Fandom and Geek Community, I can only imagine how the new film will inspire that scene!

My wife and I are professional mask makers. Yep, that is actual trade. We make our living at Renaissance Festivals and SciFi Events. We must be doing something right, because we have been full time in the trade for over 12 years. It is a niche but it is ours. I didn't come on to advertize, but there is often a lot of curiosity about our work, so http://www.mythicalmasks.com is where you can find us.

So that brings me to my question. We were recently catching Mad Max 2 on a TV Showing, and Bearclaw's mask caught my attention again. I have often wondered about it. In the back of my mind it seems I have seen it in another film, and it is very distinctive and seems a cultural piece of some sort. It just digging on my mind so much. I seem to remember seeing similar masks in another film, and the style makes me think of a Japanese reference of some sort. I have done lots of research today, digging in as far as I can into the web, and no resources seem to be coming up. I have found the image hosted on the Mad Max Costume site: http://www.madmaxcostumes.com/C2/images/mohawk3.jpg

I can't find any other reference. Seems to be there MUST be something, and if nothing else I am wondering if there is a contact, etc, for the costumers from the film. It is a professional interest, you see?

So thanks for the time, and I hope someone has something.

Sincerely,
Shane Odom

Welcome to the boards! Sorry, but I have no clue about the origins of Bearclaw's mask. Someone definitely put some thought into it, though. Maybe one of our costume experts will chime in.

It looks like a fancy wrestling mask. This is as close as I could get with my findings (so far)

Welcome, Shane!

I've never really looked closely at that mask, but now that I have... Could it be aboriginal? Australia/Tasmania? Despite the horns, it looks almost cat-like under the nose. Searching "australia leather mask" got me in the neighborhood; "leather animal mask" got me closer. And then specific animals, like bulls... But like you, nothing exact. Maybe give that a shot if you haven't already. Good luck!

I always figured it was American Indian. Just like Wez with his concho and feather arm band. The whole film has that spaghetti Western feel to it - cowboys and Indians.
