Duplicolor colors for Yellow interceptor?

Post by Rabbit »

I am building a non-canon yellow "Wasteland Pursuit" Baja Beetle for this year's Wasteland Weekend (and my own amusement.) My question is this- What colors are the stripes for a yellow MFP Interceptor? I know it's red, white and blue... But different pictures have them as very different shades thereof. I will be using duplicolor spray- so if anyone knows the best matches, that would be great.

I already have the lightbar, 2 gumballs, 2 off-road lights, siren etc. So I am hoping to get these colors ready by the end of september!

Nice baja beastie!!!

I don't think there are any definite color stats for the the MFP cars. You might want to look at pics of as many replicas as you can and contact the owner of the car that looks best. You can also look up Ford car color standards for the time and pick some out.

Mine uses torana yellow gold for the yellow (it's wrong- it should be a ford colour like yellow blaze), the white is generic, as is the red. The blue is just ford blue.

Nice baja. The yellow appears to be a pretty good match, I would agree the best blue to use would be Ford engine blue (late, early was a lighter blue witha hint of grey). The red is medium, somewhere between bright and cherry. Definitely not fire engine/ arrest me red.
Be sure to have somethign to cover your emergency lights, you can get covers for them, have them made, or just use black garbage bags. It is illeagle to operate any non-emergency vehicle with blue or red flashing lights. (It's kinda a grey area where we will be at. There will be local police and fire dept passing through. )

Now for the Volkswagen specifics: Are you using wheel adapters, or are your drums drilled with pressed in studs? Adapters are a weak link, avoid jumping the vehicle. How are your ball joints? Old ball joints are prone to breaking or pulling out of the upper control arm. If there not new, avoid jumping the vehicle. (I've got personal experience to back up this claim.)

The Yellow was Torana Mid Chrome Yellow, the Blue was Nissan Blue and the red if Ford Monza red. All these colours were manufactured in the late 1970's so they are relevant to the period these cars were originally built.

Thanks for the responses. The color is chrome yellow (not a metallic, just named as such. Blue is Ford Royal Blue, Red is Ford Cardinal Red. White is... White. Blue striping is done, as is the light bar (2 off-road lights on the outside, the 2 gumballs in the middle). The gumballs have swappable covers, so I have been driving around with yellows for legality reasons. Blues will probably be just for photos and car shows.
I don't intend to do any jumping at all with this baja- My only requirement is that it do trail riding well. I always intended it to be more of a bug-out/ survival vehicle, as opposed to a desert race car. Which is good- as I have adapters and ball joints, neither help with heavy air time.

If you sprayed the wheels yellow, it would look like the wheels on the Pursuit.
Put on the stripes (it might be cheaper to do it in vynal - worth looking into)
I'd put a roof rack on the top right at the front, with the blue beacons and a row of spotlights.
Then a vynal sicker with 'MFP Offroad Pursuit' across the back.

It could make a nice alternative car that the MFP might have used....

Done! Well, done except the badges, which are getting shipped as we speak. I know the lights aren't quite the right colors- we got a red lense after these pics were taken, so that'll be go for later shoots. As for what we can intercept? Ummm.... Coyotes? Donkeys? No idea. Though we are most likely faster than a muscle car (at least off road).

Looks good. Personally, I would have painted it as a Pursuit (but I am biased towards Pursuits).
Doing it as an Interceptor does save you painting the wheels. I'd leave the lights as blue, as the Pursuit have 2 blue lights, so who is to say what an offroad Interceptor has?.

It is a nice looking paint job for rattle cans. Almost looks like a metallic blue?
