Having launched boats, that would be too slow, as the spool has to unwind, slowing down the release. They'd need to be a way to quickly release it from the winder/spool to get the speed and kinetic energy to the bolt.

As others have pointed out, it's a movie, and it just needed to look like it would work, which it does.
It' probably good the replica isn't the same, as it could be quite deadly!

Now if anyone has a schematic of the wrist crossbow....

Totally badass and awesome! I WISH I lived nearby because I would be helping out with all my heart!

Like everyone else mentioned, the setup for that crossbow/ballista would certainly work. The only thing not seen is the quick release, but I can think of a few devices that would do the job. No need for Mythbusters, it is totally do-able!

How tall is the gate that you guys have!

In the meantime, I'll be sitting here all jealous. ;)

Humvee, if I remember right, the gates are about 8 feet tall. So not nearly as big as the fortress in the movie, but still pretty darn impressive when you see them up close. We also had to have a size that we could actually transport, because this whole fortress set it going to be taken down and moved about an hour and a half North for Wasteland Weekend in September (the sets are currently on our production designer's property as we cannot build permanent sets at the WW location).
And we are still adding to this thing. We have another guard tower planned and some extensions to the walls, not to mention the flamethrower that's going to be in the other tureet.

We wish you were here too, but maybe there's some way that you'll be able to come out again in September and see it all in person.

Well I don't have the funds to get the Humungus Machine transported out there, but if that changes you know it will be there. It needs about 10 feet of clearance. Just sayin'.

8-)

Get in touch privately about how much it would cost you to get it out here so that we can see if we can help.
