Mad Max nut travelling to New Zealand. Any suggestions?

Post by Benzito »

I am from Australia, thus I am in the country where one makes Mad Max pilgrimage, I know. But I am travelling to the south island of New Zealand in a couple of weeks and wondering if anyone can suggest anything cool to check out(post-apocalypse related or not).
I have never actually seen a BOB replica either, so are there any in the land of the long white cloud that I should check out?
I don't expect much but I'm just asking people in all the online communities I am involved with for recommendations.
Thanks for your time.

There is possibly one coupe replica in NZ and a yellow XC based replica in the build stage... but i have no clue where.

NZ always looks like a nice place to visit!

G'day from NZ. I'm based in Wellington, building a yellow MFP car. Not sure about other replicas here but I too think there maybe a black hardtop replica.

If you are doing a roadtrip the south Island will be awesome. It is where we prefer to go for a NZ holiday. Personally I recommend collecting a car in Picton or Nelson, if you have the time head right out to the North West of the Island, then back east to go south on highway 6 to Wesport, Punakaiki, Greymouth, Franz Josef Glacier, down through Mt Aspiring National Park, Lake Wanaka, Queenstown, Fiordland National Park. Depends on how long you got. You will not be disappointed by the scenery and the variety or it. Right now you are coming into the tourist season, so not too busy just yet, good time to go.

Are you passing through Wellington? Not much to see of my project as the body is at the panel shop but I'm always keen to meet a fellow Madmax nut.

There are some good breweries down south. South also has the Glaciers to climb, and some good breweries to visit.
Some of the best twisty roads I've ever been on are in the south (not to mention single lane bridges that are shared with trains coming in the opposite direction)

Oh, they also have some good breweries. Now if I can get Monteiths or Speights Black in Sydney....

Thanks for the replies gang.
@MFPNZ, you basically just described my planned trip, but starting in Christchurch, and cutting across Hanmer Springs/springs junction. Not travelling any further north than that.
Monteiths brewery in Greymouth is almost a definite must.
Daz: I've purchased Monteith's seasonal and black ales as far west as Penrith, so if you can't get them in Sydney you aren't lookin hard enough. ;)

Well, it was an amazing trip and an amazing landscape. Nothing mad max-ey to be spoken of but the lack of people/cars on the road was nice.
Too bad I had to drive a Hyundai Getz rather than my ford.
Oh yeah, in NZ it's not a 'white line nightmare' it's a yellow line nightmare.

Awesome. I think you went at a really good time as you missed the peak season. Apparently down south, but not on the coast there is a BOB on top of a hill, in fact it is just a silhouette made of plywood or similar but from a distance it is hard to tell it's not the real thing.
