I still get surprised by the reactions and the boldness of people recognising the car. No other car I have seen, gets the same excitement and desire to approach as the interceptor. It means different things to different people but its still such a magnet. At car shows, nearly every other car there has had far more work and effort paid to its restoration, costs more, is worth more and is therefore due more attention. Yet, they all get drawn to the Interceptor.
It also inspires bystanders to start sprouting movie quotes with no concern of self embarrassment.
I had the car in the Melbourne CBD on a Thursday and Friday a couple of weeks ago and it was insane. Rumbling past outdoor cafes on Bourke St was like watching the crowd at a tennis game, or the clown heads at a carnival. Everybody turned their heads in unison. The only difference was the facial expressions.
A mix of frowns, blank stares and smiles.
A few guys clapping and people calling out.
Guys in suits who most likely spend their working day with great financial responsibility, get momentarily transformed into a 12 year old boy watching mad max on VHS. The past comes back to visit them.
I pulled up at the intersection of Bourke and Spring streets where parliament house is and a guy almost got hit by a car because he jumped up from his outdoor table and stepped onto the road. With a screech of tyres and blaring of horns, he momentarily stepped back and then continued onto the road and tapped on the passenger window. He yelled over the idling engine "Last of the V V V 8's" He then stepped back and enthusiastically gave a thumbs up with a big grin.
2 mins and a block later on Macarthur St, a tradesman in a 4wd ute pulled up and stared at me for a full 3 seconds, then dead pan said " You've seen it, you've heard it, and you're still asking questions? Well done mate, looks shit hot!" then drove away.
5 mins later on the eastern freeway it was raining. 100kmh in 5 lanes of traffic and there were cars darting everywhere. People trying to get along side for a look or to take pictures with camera phones. There was a guy behind me with steering wheel in one hand and video camera in the other. He wouldn't have seen much. Nobody runs mud guards on bob's so there is a massive amount of water pickup in the wet. Its like a rooster tail of water vapour behind you when you're driving in the rain.
It was like the time on the Geelong freeway last year when Troy (maxvan) and I were chasing down 60 kawasaki's driven by members of the zowners club. What started out as a leisurely drive to the next location turned into a re-enactment. We were cutting lanes and overtaking everybody and people didn't know what the hell was going on. There was also a guy in a red old model benz with an SLR camera hanging out the window trying to get pics. The whole time he had a huge grin on his face.
I like to think of it as a piece of fantasy escaping into the real world for these people. It's as though, what they are looking at shouldn't exist, yet there it is in front of them.
Don't get me wrong, Driving the interceptor is not a public service.....It's purely selfish, self indulgent & feels incredible. It is a massive feeling of achievement.
The old man laying in his bed at the aged care facility next to my grandfather seemed to be full of regret. Not for the things he had done, but the things he hadn't. He had a favourite saying which rings in my ears still. "You will never again be as young as you are this year."
If you are putting off building or buying an interceptor until a better time, think about how you will judge yourself when you're older.

That's true, i had my yellow XB out for a cruise with the local Mustang club last weekend and I got some hoots and thumbs up from some young fellas in a pick up truck. The real kicker is this was in a small town in Ontario, Canada!

i suppose it beats the 'can you jump it' question the Dukes of Hazzard guys get with their GL replicas, or 'Where's the Flux Capacitor' you'd get if you owned a delorean...

Damn, that just gave me the kick in the arse I need to get my BoB dream underway. Fark I need to start saving. Thanks Gasoline!Gasoline wrote:The old man laying in his bed at the aged care facility next to my grandfather seemed to be full of regret. Not for the things he had done, but the things he hadn't. Re: Question for BoB owners
I learned this when i was young and with support of my parents i saved my money, built my career and built my own bob! I might be the youngest Black on black owner. Im only 28 and i have had the car for 7 years this month!
Re: Question for BoB owners
Wow. I find it hard to imagine any 21 year old, even a MM obsessed one, having the drive to actually carry out a project like that. Bear in mind I am about the same age as you, and I know I wasn't that focussed a few years ago. My hat is off to you sir.MadMatt wrote:Im only 28 and i have had the car for 7 years this month!
