Mad Max axe from MM2 - Screen accurate version eBay pics

Post by Max Replica »

I finally found a completely screen accurate version of Max's axe that he carries on his tool belt in The Road Warrior (thanks to the fan who pointed it out to me). There are some very similar axes out there (I own a couple) but until now I'd never seen one exactly like the movie. The main difference between the close ones, and this correct one is that the metal strap pieces on the sides of the axe handle are usually rounded, whereas Max's come to a point. Dave G (Humvee Driver) had the closest axe I'd seen since at least his his side pieces come to a point, but the shape of his handle wasn't 100% right.

Behold, the perfect axe:

The bad news? I didn't even come close to buying it as the bidding on eBay was way up there by the time I found it. It just sold for $253 ($306 AU). I suspect it may have gone to someone who collects antique fire brigade items rather than a deep-pocketed Mad Max fan, but you never know.
Much of that high price may have been from the condition of the axe. This thing is immaculate.
Everyone knows I'm all in favor of weathering, distressing and modifying items to make them look screen accurate (that's why we buy them in the first place, right?) but even I would have had a hard time cutting this thing in half.

Hey Maxreplica I'm thinking maybe a replica of the axe and pouch for it? Just a thought.

It's been discussed, but it's probably not going to happen from me. Here's why:
The axe itself would take a ton of resin to make. Plus it's hard to make resin look like real wood when you paint it.
The pouch looks simple, but there are actually inserts inside the pouch that hold the axe in place properly, this makes it more difficult to produce.

The right way to do this replica is a leather pouch (with no inserts) and then a fake handle sticking out, made of actual wood and metal. No need to reproduce the axe head since it's never seen in the movie anyway. There is someone exploring making a replica of this type. I'll let you all know if anything comes of it. In the meantime, the good news is that there are usually some decent and mostly accurate axes available from eBay UK.
