replica boot knife sheath now available

Post by Max Replica »

Recently, Karol and I started offering a replica Gerber Mark II (Max's boot knife). (see previous thread on this knife)

Now, I have worked with a vendor to make an inexpensive leather boot sheath available for this knife.
They are called "Carol's Country Store" and they are on Etsy.com. Here is a link to their store page:
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6850237&page=1

Here are pics (you may need to click on each picture to see the whole thing):

Important - This was not the way the sheath looked when it arrived to me. I cut the leather off at the top at an angle because that is the way Max's sheath was cut.
Also, you'll see that this sheath is very wide at the bottom. This is not accurate to a real Gerber sheath, but it was done per my instructions. The way I figured it, if the bottom of the sheath was hidden in the boot anyway, why not make it wider so that it's easier to attach to the boot? You can always cut the excess off if you want a more accurate sheath.

When I received the sheath, I saw that they had made the whole sheath wide by mistake, so I cut it down the sides as you'll see from the before and after photos. I also dyed the sheath black myself.
Here is a before picture with what the sheath looked like as shipped from the vendor:

I have sent pics of what I did back to the vendor and told them that they may want to consider cutting their future sheaths to look like mine. And they may want to offer a dyed black version. I ordered a batch of four of these for fans and modified all of them as above. They are all spoken for. But I don't make any money off of the sheath so I've decided to let fans order from the vendor directly from now on.

This sheath is not 100% accurate to a real Gerber Mark 2 sheath. But it's very close and is inexpensive. If you want something different or better, feel free to work with another vendor and let us know how you make out. The cheapest I've seen real leather Gerber sheaths go is about $45 (and that's if you're lucky enough to find one for sale without a knife). $45 seemed too much to pay for something I was going to cut off and stick in my boot.

These sheaths from Carol's Country Store should be available in the $20 or less range (I can't quote an exact price because their price could change depending on whether or not they decide to start doing the black dye etc.)
To order, just contact them directly and tell them you want the Mad Max booth sheath.

If you want the replica Gerber knife, contact me or Karol.

Hey I clicked on the link for the sheath, and they don't have it offered on their site yet. Just thought you'd want to know.

I tried sending you a PM but it says you no longer exist. So are you alive or what? :?

Humvee,
I should have been more specific - you'll need to contact them via Etsy as it is a special order item that they make to order (so they probably won't have one listed for sale on their site).

Not sure what the problem with the PM is, I got a couple earlier today from someone else.

Included in my order for the Mad Max 1 shotgun holster, I ordered a Gerber boot knife sheath from... someone. It was through esty and I'm not sure how they are affiliated with Carol's Country Store or whoever. I'm not sure that I even ordered it from the right people/person, and by the time I talked to jwrites it was too late. Maybe someone could post some info or a link explaining this and clear things up?

Here's what they had to say about my order. Kind of hard to understand, but I think once I get the pieces I can modify them, if they even need it at all.

Sent by carolscountrystore on April 17, 2010:
HOLSTER AND KNIFE CASE ARE DONE. I charged #2.50 on one and 8.00 on the other one and they can ship together.
shoot gun case... I did don"t make the loop for the gun. This you can do and it will fit the way that you want it to fit. I am sending extra rivets so just punch holes and the fit together and take a small hammer and hit them until they are flat. The strap does not have holes in it wrap around you leg and get the size you want punch the holes and cut off the excess and then take a sharpe black and color the end. I also did them in an antique black dye as opposed to the really shinny black. Now some have 2 straps for the leg and some have one... I have one on yours but if you want the second one I will send it and it can be put on ...plenty of rivits to do that... also I am sending a two prong belt buckle as we talked about. This will finish up and you will be ready to go...
thanks will send soon as the paypal comes thru with your address.. one is on alchemy and holster is on the main website I will ship together.

Anyway, here's a picture of the sheath. Anyone want to chime in on how accurate/inaccurate it is? When I get it in hand I'll post more pics.

That's Carol's Country Store's handiwork all right. To tell you the truth, that sheath doesn't look great from that pic, but once you cut away some excess leather it won't be too bad. Use reference pics from the movie or look at the pics I posted above to see how I modified the ones they sent me to look more accurate.

I actually emailed them a long time ago to show them how they could improve their sheath and spanner pouches, but I don't think they're able to communicate that well about that stuff which is why I'm now trying to get sheaths and pouches made by Magnolia Leather Works, who are great and really understand what we fans want.

I will say that the good thing about Carol's Country Store is that their products are very cheap and can often be made to look pretty decent if you're willing to put some work into them yourself.

Once you get the sheath if you're still not sure what to cut and where, send me an email and I'll give you some more specific instructions (including pics of my real Gerber sheath that I've modified to be movie accurate.

They did about the same as the last time I had them make me a Gerber sheath. It's not totally screen accurate, but it's usable after you do some cutting. After all, very little of Max's knife sheath shows above his boot anyway.

Here is how you could cut their sheath. This is one of their CarolsCountryStore ones that I modified. In looking at it again I would cut a bit more across the top than I did, to match the Gerber sheath below (And I only cut and dyed part of it since most of the bottom of it gets hidden in the boot):

Here is my real Gerber sheath, cut to look like Max's.

And here is the cut Gerber sheath in the boot (A keen eye will notice that I moved the Gerber snap higher for extra screen accuracy, but the Carols Country Store version already has a higher snap, so you won't need to do that).
