Another theory about the MM timeline
Well,
I must confess I'm starting to love and dig the idea to put another "quantum leap" in-between MM2 and MM3 in the same league of the one in-between MM1 and MM3.
This means I'm liking the idea to set apart the breakdown of the society and the nuclear exchange once and for all.
So I'm totally revising the post-MM1 timespan in my mind... and that speaks volume, isn't it?
That's my idea: each ending sequence is set about one year after the main events of the same movie and, MEANWHILE, a big "event" is happening elsewhere, changing the Mad Max World forever. Got it?
1996 - Energy crisis. The basis of the Oil war Apocalypse = Pox-Eclypse.
MAD MAX - 1997/1998. I mean, while Max is taking care of Johnny The Boy, the World War III has broken out and the breakdonw of the society has JUST started. Ironically, Johnny's act of scavenging like a vulture is an omen of the nasty things to come. Max is 24 years old.
1999 - The 747 plane rises and clashes. So, it happened before any nuclear exchange or nuclear winter, when there was still some fuel left to run a plane so big like that. After all, in 2005 Captain Walker and the adults STILL believed there were cities to join out of there, and that's because they just experienced the breakdown, not the nuclear exchange. Makes sense.
2002/3 - THE ROAD WARRIOR. That's why there's still seas left intact (Paradiso/Sunshine Coast) and Max has no geiger counter with him. The society has fallen down, the nuclear exhange has not yet happened. That was the final straw. Max is 29/30 years old. Ironically, the mashroom you can see at the ending, when the Refinery blows up, is an omen of the nasty things to come. During the very ending of RW, the nuclear exchange is happening. It only involves the costal cities.
2004/7 - Nuclear Winter.
2018/19 - BEYOND THUNDERDOME. Max is 45 years old.
What do you say?

Re: Another theory about the MM timeline
I read an interesting book that was published in the late 80's called "Australia and Nuclear war " which surmised that any Nuclear exchange would take place mostly in the Northern hemisphere sparing Australia from all out destruction . the effects would isolate the island continent from the worlds oil reserves and any new technology . The whole theory of a "Nuclear Winter " was also discredited stating that was based on the mega weapons of the 1960's and 1970's but by the 1980's , nuclear weapons were in-fact smaller "Smart bombs " ( contradiction in terms I Know ) and new info about atmospheric patterns shed doubt on the possibility of dust blocking out all sunlight for a prolonged period .I've often wondered if George Miller read the same work as i always thought thats what made Mad Max such a different vision of the Apocolypse ( I.E lack of destruction of buildings so much as a destruction of society ) . I've always thought the destroyed vision of Sydney in the end of Thunderdome was more due to locallised conflict rather than a direct nuclear attack which would completely level a relatively small city like Sydney .i assumed the dusty air due to massive dust storms ( One of which blanketed Sydney a few months ago in a scene not unlike Thunderdome ).I put to you this alternate Mad Max Timeline
1990 ( A few years from now.....) -Mad Max 1 Govenment has disbanded after a nuclear war destroys the worlds Superpowers leaving Australia Cut-off . Local order is enforced by privately funded agencies like the M.F.P . Court system has become in-effectual leading to more and more violent crime .Law enforcement is limited to major population area's with everywhere else being declared "Prohibited zones ". After the murder of Jess ang Sprog ,Max steals the Interceptor and ventures into the Prohibited zone on a murderous rampage of vengance . The loss of the Interceptor , roop and charlie , Goose and max ( Plus all but one of its cars - Max's yellow inerceptor ) leads to the disbandment of the M.F.P , a trend thats spreading through most cities and towns with Their officers becoming worse than the criminals they pursue ( I.E Bad Cops from mm2 ) Max is about 25
1992- Max modifies the Interceptor , tearing out the interior and fitting a full roll cage . the original engine is re-built when max stumbles across an old abandoned Service Station on the edge of the desert which is a treasure trove of spare parts with the ground tanks holding precious fuel sludge in the bottom . Max bases himself here for the next 2 years , running mock patrols on the surrounding highways ,killing anyone stupid enough to venture into "This Blighted Place ". on one such patrol , max accidently hits a stray Dog completely smashing the Air Dam scoop from the front of the Interceptor . while inspecting the Damage , Max sees the dog had a single puppy , now orphaned on the roadside . Max adopts the puppy in his first act of mercy since his family's murder .
1994 -with his fuel cache running dry and no Bikers left alive in area Max decides to venture deeper into the Wasteland in a search for fuel . Before leaving he quadruples the Interceptors range by ripping off the boot lid and installing two large fuel tanks from the wreck of an old bus where has been living while based at the old Garage . he also modifies the rear suspension with heavier shock-absorbers and fatter rims to cope with the additional weight.
1996 - Mad Max 2 - a 31 year old max and his now fully grown Dog push ever deeper into the wasteland , he has grown weary of killing ( which had become a messy affair since running out of shot-gun ammunition ) and spends most of his time searching for old army fuel dumps which are scattered through-out the desert. After the destruction of the interceptor and the Tanker crash , max is left with Papagallo's Lone Star buggy which is soon out of fuel so he sets out on foot . He eventually stumbles on an old mine site where he slowly constructs a new vehicle from an old ford pick-up and a D6 loader plumbed to run on diesel .
2002 - Beyond Thunderdome . with the last remnants of fuel now gone , Max is dragged from trading post to trading post by feral camels which he has captured in the endless Australian desert . With very good mechanical knowledge and deadly assassin skills , Max has much to trade and is soon quite "Wealthy " with his now canvas covered vehicle full to the top with curios of all kinds , a museum to the old world . At the same time , years of gang warfare have reduced the Cities to un- inhabitable ruins , now empty of their destroyers , lying in wait for the new generation to rebuild .
After the seeing the "Crack in the Earth " kids fly off into their destiny , Max follows on foot in an endless journey towards Tommorrow-morrow Land . Max's skeletal remains are found by trackers in about 2009 . he was lying in a dry creek bed next to a tree stump with the words " coming home "scratched into it ,he was 44 years old

Re: Another theory about the MM timeline
Sorry but this timeline doesnt work on many levels.....
A "FEW" years from now.... NOT A DECADE
A couple means 2
A few means three
Several means 5 to 7
Next is the technology or lack there of.... They are stuck in the 1970s.
At best one could say its 1985 in MM1

Re: Another theory about the MM timeline
hey roadwarrior
first , dig your yellow interceptor , second "stuck in the 70's" ? Most of the cars are very late 70's models Third dictionary says a few is less than ten , not a specific number . I think your right though , i was probably a little bit later than Kennedy/Miller had intended . I was trying to make the same point , with the original thread stating MM1 was set in 1998 with a Nuclear war happening after MM 2 which contradicts the montage at the start of the film which states that "2 mighty warrior tribes "had already gone to war before they ever met the Road Warrior . Say I set the time line 5 years earlier , would you then say it was pretty close ?
What do you recon of my inter-movie timeline , Where i am ignorantly hopeful Fury Road will be set ?

Re: Another theory about the MM timeline
I personally would say that a limited nuclear exchange had already happened prior to MM2, but some considerable time after MM1.
If one would assume that MM1 was set around the early 1980s, then a ten year gap would be sufficient between the two periods.
Meaning that MM2 would be around the early 1990s. However one interesting little bit of info which Bertrand Cadart (spelling?) mentioned during the reunion at Little River last year was that MM2 was supposed to be set in around 2009?
Which gives us a 30yr gap !
And yes I meant to say stuck in the late 1970s. The only real "period" cars we ever see are the XC Police car at the accident scene and the Ambulance!.... All the MFP cars were 1975 and younger. Even Max's panel van. The rest are all pretty much old cars in 1978/79.
If one were to keep "real life events" such as the USSR Communist block going to war against the USA , then Australia would probably receive at least 2 to 3 warheads. Canberra, Sydney and Pine Gap (US early warning tracking/ listening post).
Canberra being the aussie capitol and Sydney having the largest population base. This would be all that is needed to destroy the infrastruture and the country's moral etc.....

Re: Another theory about the MM timeline
very interesting , although I don't know about mm2 being 30 years later !it would make max in his 50's and 60ish when he defeats Masterblaster in the thunderdome . when i read your original reply , I assumed you were putting it in real world perspective which could really only put 5 or 6 years between mm1 and mm2 as fuel has a limit shelf life ( Unless they were refining it "Kachoonk Kachoonk Kachoonk " ) As a blown small block 351 ( If even possible ) would need a rebuild every FEW hundred Km's , I assume we aren't talking about the interceptor in real world terms but if we were , the paint work would be bleached to a light grey within 10 years in the desert sun ( I've had it happen while living in Blackwater , central Queensland ) . Also , Australia being hit by Nuclear Strikes is under the assumption that the USSR got all of its weapons airbourne before they were targeted on the ground . With what we have learned since the collapse of the USSR , The Russian offensive capabilities were far from as comprehensive as was thought during the cold War . Even if major cities in Australia were hit , much of rural Australia ( Where MM1 is set ) would not be affected by the initial blasts . Lastly In the Intro to Mad Max 2 the "2 mighty warrior tribes going to war " are mentioned as a prelude to "Gangs taking over the Highway " which is accompanied by footage from the first film suggesting to me that the war had already happened before MM1 . But since I'm taking in real world terms , The feral Kid (who's voice we here ) would not have remembered the war or known about Jess and Sprog
's murder anyway . Maybe Gyro and max had a pow wow about it and he told the kid later , But they didn't strike me as chatty
I hope this doesn't come off as obnoxious , I really have enjoyed your replies , well thought out and clever . A nice change from some other threads I've read recently ( No offense to anyone else )

Re: Another theory about the MM timeline
Blackwater aye... I have a friend there.
Im only just up the road.
Yes the idea of real world and max world gets too blurry in my opinion.
You have to try and use real world experiences to try and make things fit (which never will).
The capabilities of the USSR were as you say "not up to scratch" and in fact most of their ICBMs (as well as the USAs) probably wouldnt even get off the ground or even hit their intended targets.
As for engines, fuels, battery life, alternators etc etc etc... well again one has to go into fantasy land and say that those items never wear out in movie land etc.
It would be impossible for the Interceptor to last all those years without so much as an air filter on that scoop.
Dont get me wrong, Miller/ Kennedy did a great job in detailing those vehicles, sets etc into what would be believable.
However like Miller says, it is "story telling" after all and your allowed to have a certain creative licence when it comes to making movies. Some movies fail incredibly when they go over the top (EG when you contantly see car crashes where the car explodes and flies into the air, complete with engine missing!).

god , I hadn't even considered batteries and air filters , or living on dog food without toilet paper! in leather pants no less , sitting in corpse puddle while driving the mack . I don't think I like max in "The real world " , Fantasy land is far less smelly , Although terms like Fantasy land and Artistic license could be considered Blasphemic by some diehards .

Re: Another theory about the MM timeline
...
1- On the pianting depicting the "Great Leaving" of Captain Walker, there's a date: August 2005. This means the nuclear exchange is not too far from that year. This means the breakdown is not to far from that year. This means MAD MAX 1 is not too far from that year.
So, in my mind, MM1 happened in 1997. Remember, it's a different continuum, an alternate Earth. Their 70es and 80es were very different from "ours".
2- In between Thunderdome there are 15/18 years. See the children, generations. I picked up "16 years".
