Can you mix the different kinds of radiator fluids?

Post by HUMVEE Driver »

Ok, my Humungus Machine is based on a 1984 Ford F150. It needed radiator fluid, and I poured 3/4 of a jug of the new orange stuff in there. Being an '84, it probably had the usual green stuff. I thought I had heard that you could mix the two fluids with no problem. But then a buddy tells me no; mixing the two will rot your seals. So does anyone know for sure?

I don't know for sure, but I've always heard you shouldn't mix..

Your local Parts store would know.. (Well, they SHOULD if they deserve their paychecks, anyway) I'd give 'em a shout A.S.A.P. No sense in damaging the machine.

If it can be mixed it will always say on the packaging, some newer coloured ones can be mixed with older green variants but they always state so. If it does not state it, then the general rule of thumb is no they should not be mixed.
