What happened to the Mad Max 2 special edition?
What happened to the Mad Max 2 special edition?
I recall that, years ago, a two disc special edition of Mad Max 2 was being produced. Since then, there has been absolutely zero news of it. Does anybody know what happened to it? The only evidence I can dig up is the original announcement posted on this site and the ezydvd page, which says that the "product is no longer available".

I remember the announcements, I also remember a previous incarnation of Fury Road being on the cards at the same time as well. Then it seemed to go away when Fury Road went away. When Road Warrior was subsequently released on Blu-ray, it had a new commentary, which I kind of wondered if it was a left-over from this unproduced special edition, or something that had been recorded new. As for whether there was meant to be anything else, I would say that if there are any likely future special editions of the films (any of them), it would most likely be timed to coincide with the release of Fury Road at this point.

there's probably a specail edition of BT in the works too, the SE mad max trilogy will probably be released in a box set when fury road comes out in theateres, like they usually do when they revamp an old franchise... dukes of hazzard, starsky & hutch, transformers... & a bunch of others.

I doubt there would be a "director's cut" of any of the existing films ever. Certainly there are scenes that were cut, but I doubt they'd warrant inserting back into the film. I'd be pretty sure George Miller got exactly the cut he wanted with what he had on each of the previous efforts. I'd be more than happy to see some of the cut scenes as extras, but I don't know that recutting the film is necessary.
Some behind the scenes stuff (particularly for Thunderdome) would be nice to see presented properly. I gather there are various legal issues with the Thunderdome promotional material though, so who knows if it will ever make it to DVD.

What are the issues? Was there some sort of change in distributor before release?Peter Barton wrote: Some behind the scenes stuff (particularly for Thunderdome) would be nice to see presented properly.
