UPDATE: June 2011- Resin replica Mad Max Gerber Mk II knives

Post by Max Replica »

UPDATE: THESE ARE FINALLY AVAILABLE AGAIN, SEE RECENT POST AT BOTTOM OF PAGE.

Hey guys,
As you veteran Road Warrior costumers already know (and what the rest of you will soon discover) is that getting an accurate boot knife for your MM2 costume is difficult and expensive. You can see the other post I did in this forum all about Max's knife for the specifics. The basics are that it's a Gerber Mark 2 combat knife and it sells for between $130 and $200 on eBay - when you can find a correct one (which isn't always easy).

So here is what Karol and I have done. We used my correct authentic Gerber knife, made a silicone mold and are now making resin copies. These knives are great for two reasons:
1. They're WAY cheaper than the real thing, while still looking very very accurate.
2. They are not real double edged knives and are less likely to get confiscated by security at a fan convention, or even worse - law enforcement (there aren't a lot of public places where you're encouraged to carry a double edged knife in your boot).

This knife is available now in limited quantities and I may be able to make more if there is enough demand. I'm not intending this for profit, I'm mostly just trying to make back what I spent on casting supplies (silicon and resin etc.) This particular knife has never been made as a resin copy as far as I can tell (there are occasionally resin Gerber knives on some of the Alien fan forums, but those are a different blade style and they're all black)

The knives are $30 each, plus shipping (overseas shipping is possible, but I'm not responsible if you get in trouble with customs).

They come fully finished and fully painted. They're made with high quality grey 1630 resin (the one a lot of movie pros prefer) and then spray painted black and silver. The mold is detailed enough that you can even see the serial number on the blade from the original knife.

In the picture I'm attaching, you'll see the real gerber on top and the fake one on the bottom. (click on the picture if the whole image doesn't appear).

PM me if you're interested in one of these or if you have any more questions.

I've added a picture of the unpainted knife so you can see the process when it comes out of the silicone mold:

Re: resin replica Mad Max Gerber Mark II knives now available

Where were you guys back when I paid $75.00 for mine? Kidding. :) If you haven't already, you may want to try posting on the Aliens Legacy Forum. You might find some interested fans there. I have an account there, I'll just ask if anyone is interested in a quality resin Gerber.

If I ever get any trouble from security or whoever, I'll definitely want one.

Congrats on only paying $75 for the real thing - you got a bargain.
Although truth be told, you can get inaccurate real Gerbers in about that range. They look pretty close but they're the modern version so they have the wrong shape blade and it's often one of the new black blades. (and unfortunately the newer blades all come with nylon sheaths, not leather. They stopped making the leather sheaths a long time ago, unless you buy one of their special "anniversary" knives).

This is a cast of the exact one Max uses, which was only made between 1978 and 1980.

Yes, feel free to post on the Aliens boards for us if you like. I could always do a special order with a black blade for the same amount of money (it's actually one step easier since I only have to use one type of paint.) The only difference between this and the Aliens one is that this has a slight wasp shape to the blade and theirs is straight.

I'll post some "making of" pictures soon in case you guys want to see the process of making these.

And if we're able to sell a few of these, we may take the time to create a couple of other Max related resin replicas that are usually impossible for fans to find (or afford). Stay tuned...

This is something I just posted on one of the Aliens forums, but I thought I'd post it here as well, it's a picture of the all black version of the knife (this one is more correct for Aliens fans, but I'll gladly do it for anyone who asks. It may not be Mad Max accurate color-wise, but it still looks cool).

Just an update that we are now using a different type of resin for this knife. It's white rather than grey and flexes slightly more. Still isn't rubbery or floppy though, just slightly more flexible than the old resin, which may help prevent breakage a bit (though either resin knife will snap if you bend the blade too far, so best not to play with it too much). These should never break during normal costume use, but if you bend on purpose or pretend to stab something with it or whatever, it will snap. It's a plastic knife after all...

There's nothing wrong with the grey resin we were using, but we bought a batch of the white stuff for making shoulder plates and decided to use it for the knives as well. It is still a very high quality resin used by Hollywood professionals (Mould Life Inc. Easy Flo 60 for anyone interested)

UPDATE JUNE 2011
---------------------

Well, after about a year and a half I finally did a new run and I have a few of these available again. And I'm even selling these for a few dollars less. $27 plus shipping, while they last.
I don't know when I'll do another run of these (if ever) so I'd say if you want one, get it now.
