Jim Goose Costume Discussion

Post by Mad Maxwell »

So, while waiting for parts to finish my Goose motorcycles, I though I'd do a little work on my costume. Here's a list of items and what I plan on doing about them. I have also thoroughly checked out Karol's site and all the provided links.

From top to bottom:

Silver helmet - any suggestions for a brand? Been looking at Bells on ebay but I reckon' anything will do.

Wind screen - ebay?

Face shield - Home made? Source? I got nothing.

Shirt - Blue Bonds Raglan or equivalent Hanes brand until an opportunity comes up for the real thing.

Jacket - Probably Abbeyshot but I'm a little concerned with the amount of reported mods that have to go into this jacket after putting close to $500 into it... What about all the padding and stitching?

Forearm guards - Source? Home made? I got no idea...

Gloves - No idea...

Holster? Does Goose have a holster/revolver like Max's?

Belt/baton - Ideas for a type/source?

Pants - Ideas for a source? South Beach? I want pockets, I don't care if it's not accurate... :)

Knee pads - Sporting goods shop? Hardware store? What type are they?

Boots - This is a difficult choice. I like the straps and buckles. boots4all.com has the Underground version but it lacks 2 straps and looks a little short. Spring the big bucks for the gen 4 Super Victory's? I would go this route but these boots have cam buckles rather than straps and I'm not too sure about how this looks.

Help ya'll!

If I were to try to put together a Goose costume (and I wouldn't, because it looks almost as intensive as the Wasteland Max costume), I think I'd start with the South Beach Leather jacket. If you're just going to beat it up, why pay for an AbbyShot? Also, they may be willing to do mods for you when you purchase. Their e-mail response time can be lengthy, though. (Their shipping was fast.)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've been all over Karol's site. Now, I'm looking for opinions and some technical details not available there.

Thanks again!

I mention the option of contacting me for more info on some of the items - specifically the face mask, and forearm guards. The face mask is available in fiberglass and there was a thread all about it last year. I can send you the email address of the guy who makes replicas (based on a real original face mask) if you email me.
I also know the brand of the forearm guards (which may have also been used for the kneepads) so again, just email me and I'll send you a pic and info.
As for the baton. check the "Max and MFP" section of my website, as Jwrites found a great cheap source and posted info here as well.
The Abbyshot jacket does not require a lot of mods at all - the only complaint so far is the flare cut. The Southbeach, though, requires more for accuracy, plus you would have to provide your own improved oval plastic shoulder cap substitutes for their circular leather ones. I wouldn't trust SouthBeach to get the extra padding/stitching right.
Southbeach seems to be about the only choice as far as pants - I'm assuming you want the front pockets but not the back.

As for the boots, why don't you just go screen-accurate and get the 2nd-generation Alpine Stars Hi-Point boots? Modern MX boots are much bulkier and higher than the old classics. If you just want an approximate look with out the high price tag, then maybe the Underground boots are right for you.

Just a couple of quick points on top of what Karol said -
The other complaint about the Abbyshot jacket is that it MIGHT be a tiny bit too long depending on how it fits you (Madmaximages found this to be the case) - but you could easily have it shortened at the same time as you fix the flared cut (if you decide to do that).

About the pants - we've figured out that the pants in film one for Max have no pockets at all whereas in film two he just has front pockets. I'm assuming Goose's pants in film one don't have front pockets either but I'd have to check. (I've studied just Max's stuff in these two movies so many times that I'm starting to forget any other characters were even in them).

Also - see the recent discussion about the sunglasses. As for the blue bonds shirt, as of a few weeks ago Kohl's had one that was pretty similar. I think American Apperal also stocks a sky blue t-shirt. I'm going to check that one out but I haven't seen it in person yet. I have one from Michael's that a few other people have bought, but it's really a bit too dark.

Guys, thanks for the replies. Hope everyone has had a great new year!

An update: I was able to secure a set of original Alpinestars so I'm good in that department. I just need to figure out how to restore the shine and color as they're kind of scuffed. I don't want then to look perfectly new but just not so used as they will contrast poorly with the newer parts of the outfit.

Karol and Jwrites, thanks for the hard work and research that has gone into the costume site, lots of great info there and I'll be contacting you directly regarding the other pieces as I begin on that part of the outfit.

So, any ideas on leather finish repair that can be done at home? The boots are not torn, just roughed up in quite a few places. I'll post pictures here when I get a chance.

Thanks!

If they are not torn but just scuffed up, you definitely should be able to work on them at home pretty easily. If you post some pics I'll have a better idea. You'll probably be looking at a combination of some leather dye and polish/cream of some sort. (but you may need to clean them first with something like saddle soap).
