Did anyone else not like Zetta?

Post by dcampbell007 »

That supposedly 'good' tribe member from The Road Warrior. I guess you can call him Pappagallo's right hand man, and he was my least favorite of the entire crew. He was whiny and solicitous the minute Max arrives at the refinery. I guess you can say Zetta was understandably nervous and hesitant like everyone else. Then, he complains about Pappagallo letting Max go. Only to reveal he's just interested in keeping his vehicle rather than Max's welfare or the welfare of others. Such insensitivity is further shown when Zetta later says to Max, "you couldn't even ride a wheelchair". Insensitive considering how Max earlier tried to save Nathan's life even if it was solely for the purpose of getting gasoline. Any 'good' traits of Zetta's character is totally contradicted by his brutal attitude towards the raiders in the climactic chase scene. At one point, he incinerates a vehicle full of marauders. Not only that, but he laughs hysterically and derives great satisfaction from doing so. I call that sadism. Would heroes or 'good' guys be so gleeful after killing a bunch of baddies? I didn't really feel bad at all when Zetta died. I just figured he was a duplicitous scumbag who got what was coming to him. The more I think about it, Pappagallo was maybe even a bigger scumbag. Were there any 'good' people in The Road Warrior? What about the Gyro Captain and his cute girlfriend?

If I had brought down a vehicle full of marauders I would have been pretty happy too. Remember that these people had watched their comrades being tied up and and burned and whipped. Don't forget about the mechanic who was also very thrilled after seeing the vehicle light ablaze. Of course there are characters like the warrior Woman who kills marauders with efficiency and without any emotion at all. It all depends on the character that Miller wanted to portray. The 'good' people are not professional soldiers and how they react to kiling and death is different from person to person. As far as the Gyrocaptain goes, remember how he cheered when he got the man with the snake, causing the vehicle to crash? He's definately no sadist. The marauders are just so dehumanized that killing them is no problem. Their actions have warranted complete extermination without quarter.

If someone is intent on Killing you.. Is it evil to defend one's self?

The Marauders wouldn't be attacking the compound if they weren't intent on Killing the defenders..

I think it's obvious that Zetta felt Max was one of the Marauders, trying some trick to get inside the compound (For the equally obvious reasons)

Here's a Good/Evil question.

On a scale of, say 1-100, one being the worst, evilest bastard ever and 100 being Saintly, where do you all suppose you fit?

I'm going to say I'm in the 60-70 range.
I generally TRY to be a good person, But I've done a few not-so-nice things and I'm fair sure I'd damage an attacker somewhat worse than was strictly necessary to halt the attack.
(Well, if I could take him)

There are more shades of grey than there are of black and white.

Why do you think Bubba Zanetti is the evilest, and how did that worthless scumbag Mudguts manage to get a 19?

Personally I think the attitude of the compound dwellers makes bold statement in the film. IMO the whole concept of Road Warrior is showing the paths a dystopic society can take, within the compound you have the remains of what regard as a good moral society while outside marauders have devolved into immoral animal like behaviour. I believe that characters like Zetta are their to show how mercenary their group has had to become as they slowly slip towards becoming like the marauders themselves.

This only heightens the haunting terror within the Road Warrior, the concept that you might find what looks like salvation in a group of survivors only to find out they are so desperate you are seen only as a drain on their limited resources.

For me Zetta's personality and role only strengthen the moral goodness within the compound, the fact Pappagallo keeps him as his right hand man and considers his alternative opinions shows they are operating like a true democracy.

Good question!

1. Jim Goose (Mad Max) -55/60 (generally 'happy-go-lucky')
2. Labatouche (Mad Max) -50 (self serving, not necessarily 'evil')
3. Max Rockatansky -50
4. Toecutter (Mad Max) -10/20 (cold, calculating, crazy on a stick.)
5. The Gyro Captain (The Road Warrior) -55(self serving with 'some' scruples)
6. Roop (Mad Max) -48/50 (borderline)
7. Bubba Zanetti (Mad Max) -25 (cool, calculating)
8. Gyro Captain's Girl (The Road Warrior) -95
9. Pappagallo (The Road Warrior) -60/65
10. Johnny the Boy (Mad Max) -30 (easily pushed into doing bad.)
11. Zetta (The Road Warrior) -55
12. Aunt Entity (Thunderdome) -50 (works for the 'greater good' even if that means doing bad things)
13. Grease Rat (Mad Max) -48 (self serving. Works with 'evil' even if he doesn't do 'evil' himself.)
14. Wez (The Road Warrior) -15/20 (Crazy on a stick, with barbecue sauce)
15. Mudguts (Mad Max) -(can't recall him)
It's all very sujective. So many different shades of grey.

Also, you didn't specify whether 'max' was pre-death of Goose/family or post.

Prior to the deaths, I'd rate hiup around 60-ish, same as Goose. I don't think any of the MFP are 'evil', they just walk the tightrope between law and lawlessness.
