What makes The Road Warrior superior to Mad Max?

Mad Max 2 of course, is the reference of the trilogy for most people. I saw it back in 82 as I was around 14. But is was so terribly frustrating to me not having seen the first one, since I was too young to see it on theatres. Mad Max was Rated 18 here in France (before 83 it was even banned).
Later in 85 Thunderdome came out with its comfortable budget and I still was wanting to see the original movie. BTD is just an good movie, I agree, but as a puberscent young man, I absolutely wanted to see Mad Max 1. Then my best friend and me got the opportunity to see it 86, after school, and we both had to agree that it was the best of all three movies.

NO Mad Max movie is "superior" among the others. They are three different movies, each provided with an unique flavour, and unique scope, an unique style, an unique vision.

I prefer to express myself in Byron Kennedy's terms: there's a "quantum leap" inbetween the various Mad Max movies.

I saw The Road Warrior first, in 1982, and loved it--I had no idea it was a sequel to another film. When I first saw MM, I thought it moved too slow, was too talky. But I've grown to appreciate it as much as RW. It doesn't have the same action impact, but I enjoy the films equally, in different ways. They're like the cinematic equivalent of comfort food.

Agree. Prefer MM1 simply because of the bikes and Toecutter

Hahhaa, I simply decided to get a bike cuz of Stone and the first Mad Max movie. my first bike was just an annoying Honda CBX 400 F2 with Fairing but later on in the same year I found my baby Z 1000 A1: The one ridden by Toecutter and the rest of the important members of the gang.

To me Mad Max and The Road Warrior are incomparable, they are just too different.

Mad Max is more slow paced and haunting, The Road Warrior is more action based and entertaining.

I can see why The Road Warrior tends to get more fans, on the surface is a dumb action movie, you can just sit and enjoy the action. The fundamental plot is similar to a classic cowboy western.

As for myself, I prefer Mad Max over The Road Warrior hands down. Both with the American dubbing and the un-dubbed version.

Mad Max 1 has the better scenario, better dialogues, better actors and it's still the one of the trilogy I like to see multiple times.

To me, MM1 & RW are about equal, but because of my love of Goose's ride, and the YRBlue Pursuit/Interceptors (sorry to all the BoB fans), I have to go with the first film, even though the pacing is a bit too slow at times in the 'talky bits.'

I won't even mention how disappointed I still am with Thunderdome compared to the other 2 films. Oh wait, I just did.
