Hi framed,
Customizing the boots is not something I recommend fans to do themselves. It's best left to a professional shoemaker who has the right machines. Cutting the boots shorter and cutting out the front notch isn't that hard, but adding the leather strips and loops to the back of the boots requires special sewing machines. In addition, 4 straps need to be made for MM1 boots, and 2 straps and a pair of boot harnesses need to be made for the MM2 version.
Luckily for me, I own a pair of originals. I let my friends borrow these for reference when they bring their Russian boots to the shop.

I was in my local cobbler's shop the other day to have a holster re-dyed and I asked about custom boots. The guy says yeah, they can do whatever, just bring a picture. I ask for a ballpark figure. Starting at $495, he tells me. :o

That's too high, obviously, but that price is not that surprising. Custom leather items are often expensive if the person making them thinks they'll only make one. They're charging you for making the pattern etc.. That's why starting with an actual pair of boots that fits you well and just having them modified can be much much cheaper.

I got a nice pair of mad max 1 style boots off of eBay for only $15 or so. They even have the square buckles. The soles aren't correct but who can tell when you're standing in them eh?

Karol saw them at Roadwar NW in 2007 but I'm not sure if he got a good look or remembers them at all.
