Yes, I'm pretty certain it's only been three years between the first and second films, notwithstanding the conceptual gap between the two, and here's why, outside of the fact that it's something that the director's reiterated numerous times:

I'm still undecided between 4, 5 or 6. No way it's just 3 years, look at the Feral Kid, look at the world depicted in MM2.
On the other hand, I pretty much love the mythological aspect, thank you for posting this.

To say Sydney was bombed with conventional bombers is purely Hollywood fantasy..... where does all the fuel for ginormous armarda come from?

They hit other Aussie cities. Cranberra and Perth, in my mind.

I talked to a guy a while ago who made a good argument that the war happened before MM1. Much of the world had been destroyed. Australia didnt take a major role in the war, and was attempting to hold on to society.

In a movie called THE DAY AFTER based on possible true events in the future. Was filmed in my home town around Kansas city area, All the USSR missiles were aimed toward the US missle silows around the nation, known as (minute men) missils, so if there are any US bases/silows in OZ they would be targeted.

We are a "nuke" free zone... and never had silos here, just small, but "important" listening posts and early warning bases.
Manning was typically very small, with only 20 or so US personnel. I think we had 3 such installations.
New Zealand had/ has one still going and it is fully automated. Part of the Echelon program (dunno if i spelt that correctly!)

I have seen plenty of "doomsday" type movies which often show missile tragectories towards Australia. Typically at least 3 !
