Replica MM1 Mad Max SHOTGUN HOLSTER now available!

Post by Max Replica »

More great news everybody:
Magnolia Leather Works, the same folks I worked with to bring you the screen accurate Road Warrior shotgun holster, now has the original Mad Max shotgun holster available as well.

Just to be clear, I'm not involved in this project financially, so I don't get any profit from this. This was simply a custom item that I paid to have made to very strict specifications and I have now convinced the maker to make the item available for sale to the wider fan community.

Just like the first holster, I am very happy with the way this turned out. First, here is a link to where you can get the holster:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?li ... d=32071903

Now let me tell you some more about this holster and then I'll attach a picture.
I spent a lot of time studying all of the screenshots and promos shots from the movie in order to give accurate instructions for the manufacture of this item. Here are a few things that are important and that this holster gets right:
1. The holster is a tube shape, straight down from the belt and is open at the bottom.
2. The holster is long enough to cover the entire gun (unlike the Road Warrior holster where the shotgun sticks out the bottom.)
3. There is one leg strap.
4. The holster is made to fit a 1 3/4 inch duty belt (but I'm sure you can custom order it to fit other belt sizes.)
5. The stitching matches the original, with straight stitching down one side and a rectangular stitched area just below the belt (I hadn't even been aware of this detail before the recent HD screenshots were posted).
6. The holster is the correct size to fit a standard double barrel sawed off, or a replica like the Hudson gun.
7. The holster is high quality black leather, not weathered like the Road Warrior holster.

I don't believe anything like this has been offered before. What are you waiting for? Go buy it! And please post here if you buy one, I'm sure fans and the vendor would like to hear what you think. I'll be posting pics of both my holsters soon.
Please note, this holster costs $10 more than the MM2/Road Warrior holster. I was told that's because it uses more leather and has a lot more stitching. Neither of the holsters from this vendor are cheap, but they are very accurate, very high quality items made by a veteran holster maker.

Here is a photo (There are more on the Magnolia Leather Works site). In this photo you'll see my plastic shotgun. This was used for measurements since it has the exact same dimensions as the Hudson gun, but this way I didn't have to send my valuable Hudson gun through the mail.

UPDATE!
The above picture and description was of the first prototype holster. I now have the final production version and it is even better. I'll attach two new pictures here and a few more on page 2 of this thread (with my replica Hudson gun in it.)

The differences are, the buckle is now nickel instead of brass, the top part of the holster is finished leather rather than the rough side, and there are grooves down the sides of the top part.
The upper part (the drop from belt to holster) is made to order on mine since I didn't want the bottom of the holster to extend past my knee. Madmaximages (Curtis) also got one of these and his upper part is the same length as the one from the movie since his legs are longer than mine. Curzn2themax (Alan) got one of these too. All three of us were very happy with it and you can see pics of us wearing them at Road Warrior Weekend threads.

Sweet! Just what I've been waiting for. Two things: One, it should have a chrome buckle, not brass. Two, and I'll defer to your expertise on this, but in the movie, is the belt loop (for lack of a proper term) unfinished or finished? In some of SpringLeaf's screen grabs, it looks finished (in other words, every part facing outward looks finished); in others, it looks like the back side of the leather. Obviously in terms of simplicity, the way Magnolia built it is the way to go. It just looks rougher than I expected.

What say you?

As for the buckle: I'm inclined to believe that it should be chrome as well. But there are some shots where it looks a bit like tarnished brass. Remember that under bright lighting (and when filmed) shiny metals tend to appear silvery regardless of their color. That said, I'm going to hit mine with a bit of sand paper which usually takes thin brass plating and turns it silver (since it's almost never real brass anyway, just fake plating). The vendor could not find the correct buckle available in silver.

You're right, the top of the holster looks finished and unfinished in various shots in the film. That's the aggravating part of trying to create something "screen accurate". My suspicion is that since the leather at the top of the holster looks the most rough in closeups, it actually is a rougher leather, but even rough leather can have a shine to it when it's black and the light hits it a certain way (especially in longer shots where you can't see the texture.
But I definitely think the term "rough" or "textured" leather is more correct than unfinished. Unfinished leather (to me) tends to mean what the back side of a piece of leather looks like, which is really rough and ragged (almost like ragged suede). The top of the magnolia holster doesn't look like that at all. It just looks like it might be a rougher texture than the rest. I'll know more when I get it in my hands.

I'll include a shot from the movie where it definitely looks like rough leather (it's a big HD shot so you may need to click it or download it to see the whole thing):

That's exactly what it looks like to me—the back side of the leather—as if the smooth side faces the leg and then wraps around the gun.

I'll wait for your expert review.

It just hit me: what if they used a "stunt holster" for the rolling-around-on-the-ground shots? Note how the holster looks much shinier in the other shots like when he's limping to the car, and it has a more square cross section, rather than the teardrop cross section of the "nice" one. Also, the stitching is far less obvious (almost invisible) in the screen grab. Gads.

OK, never mind the stunt holster. One other difference: there appears to be stitching around the whole border of the "drop leg" piece:

I'm pretty sure there's a better picture elsewhere, but it's past my bedtime.

Picky? Hey, I learned from you guys. :)

I noticed the site said "1 in stock" last night. Guess they'd better get busy; I'm ready to order one myself.

They make each item to order, so there's really no such thing as sold out. But he's pretty busy right now so if you want one I would get that order in (try contacting them to get on a waiting list or something if it won't let you order through the etsy site). And you might want to specify whether you'd need it by Halloween or if you just need it in November for Road Warrior Weekend.

As for the stitching down the side at the top, more stitching means more $, and the goal was to keep this holster under $100. I'm sure it's something you could have added custom to yours if you want to pay a bit more.

I should be getting mine in a day or two if you want to wait to order until I post my review. But I think this thing is going to be popular, so if I wanted one by Halloween I'd probably get in line now...

The "add to cart" button is grayed out, so... I emailed Magnolia to suggest they get busy, as at least two of us are ready to buy. When I order, I'll see what options are available to me.

The very first gun holster was just finished yesterday so be patient if he doesn't have it available for order yet. But telling him a couple of people want to order probably won't hurt.
Just to be specific, I don't think there will be options for modifications listed on the site, it's something you'll have to email him specifically about (like the extra stitching).
