Possible pads?

Post by Rotton »

Hey, started working on a Max, found the costume site, the Roadwar page, and this board! Awesome. Anyway I got some pads from a guy, they are Rawlings Crusader, CP 86. I know the site says the CP 46. Looks pretty darn good to me, what do you think? Has the 3 top shoulder rivits, the two stap slots, the rivit next to it, and the pad part (looks) more square than the CP 46 on the tutorial. But the actual plate does seem a bit wider, but man, pretty close. He sold me this one, and at the time I thought it was it. But he supposedly has many more, he has no idea what numbers they are, but most are said to be Rawlings, and probably (possibly) crusaders.I could see if I can get a hold of him again, and I could probably get more. Pretty much for whoever would want them, as I have this one!

Hi Rotton,
The pads you have are not film accurate. The plate is wrong. But at least in you're in the right neighborhood: they are Rawlings with white plastic and gray padding. There really is no "magic number" or specific logo that will assure you an accurate plate. I've seen Crusaders, as well as CP-46's, that had the wrong plate style.

Maybe your shoulder pad guy has some CP-66's or FB series pads? http://madmaxcostumes.com/pads.htm

I've been recently thinking of ways to help fans identify the right plate design. As we all know, the right plate has the oval "crater" on top. But it seems so many have trouble discerning the differences in the overall shape of the plate. So let's try this:
Do you see how the strap on the front looks like a square? Now imagine placing these squares below the strap on the plate. In the pictures above, you could fit only about one whole square underneath the strap. Do you see that?
There are other common plates that most fans mistake for the right plate (plate "b" on my site) - on these you can again only fit 1 comfortably, but there's enough room left over to where you just might fit 3/4 of a square in there, right?
On the correct plate, however, you could fit 2 squares in below the strap comfortably (although at first glance it looks like even 3 may fit). That's how much more room there is on the correct plate (see plate "a").

Rotton,
In addition, to the CP-66s and the FB series that Karol mentions above, if you get in touch with the guy, see if he has any CP-46 pads. I'd want to see a picture of them first though since, as Karol said, some CP-46s are okay and some are not.

Finding ANY source of grey and white Rawlings pads right now is difficult, so if this guy has access to more we'd love to hear about it.

Well mine has the oval crater, but side by side I see the strap placement like you said, and it is wider from neck to outer edge. I knew it was not right, but I thought close enough.. but I see now not really.. Well for a halloween costume where no one would know, (which is how I got started on this, but now want it right) but as a SW costumer I know the seriousness of accuracy! I am going to do more research and see if these are anywhere, maybe use them for "inspired' type gear. I will be getting with that guy in the next few days, I'll see what I can get, I'll let you know. Thanks for the input.

The pads you have will pass for 90% of folks. Everyone will think you're costume is great. And accurate. But you will know in your heart that they are wrong, and that you are a fraud.
Because your shoulder plates are not perfect. And that shameful fact will eat at your soul until you become as sick as the rest of us.
Well, most of us.
Okay, just me and Karol.

Want proof? I have just painted the fake shotgun shells of my replica Mad Max gun to look like the shells Max had in the movie. Including the brand logo on the shells that only became visible recently when someone posted screenshots from the bluray disc. I will post pictures of them soon. Because you're only as sick as your secrets.

Penny whistles come in a variety of sizes, tuned to various 'keys". :ugeek: I have gotten one myself and it will 'have to do' because I doubt we'll ever know exactly which key Max's is ;)

Holy crap... and I thought I was decidated to film accuracy!

I know my Max shoulder plate is wrong, but like you said, no one is going to notice. Except Karol. And jwrites. At least until I get one of your replica plates. :)

You guys should be glad you're not making a replica of The Humungus Machine. There are so many tiny things as well as big things that you have to get right. I've made mistakes, and I'm not changing anything on mine, but if I did it all over again it would be better.

Not to get this thread off topic (too late) but I have to say again how impressive it is that you built the humungus machine. Especially since you do a lot of small scale models as well. There aren't a lot of folks that can work equally well in 1/32 and 1/1 scale!

I can't really handle anything more complicated than changing a tire so making a replica machine is never going to happen for me.
