Max's MFP sunglasses - suitable version found on eBay!

Post by Max Replica »

After successfully sourcing a cheap supplier of Sam Browne belts and multi-tool/rigging knives here in the U.S. (see other threads) - I am happy to report another great find:

As many of you know, the sunglasses Max wore in the first movie are very hard to find. I'm not sure that anyone has even identified exactly what make and model they were. My guess is that even the people who made the movie don't remember at this point.

The goal is to find something that looks similar, but I can tell you from looking, it is not easy. The hardest thing is to find some late 70s, early 80s aviators with that little oval space between the lenses. There are pictures on Karol's website of some eBay sunglasses that have this. The trick has been to find a pair in that style that also has silver (metal) frames (often the frames are gold metal or plastic), and grey lenses (the lenses on the ones on Karol's page appear to be incorrect brown/amber).

I'm happy to report that after an exhaustive internet merchant and eBay search (I looked at over 3,000 pairs of aviator style glasses) I managed to find ONE PAIR that had all of the desired traits. Are they an exact match to Max's glasses? No. Are they as close as anyone is likely to find these days? My guess is yes.

Here are pics of Max's sunglasses from the movie, and two pics of the ones I ordered that just arrived. I apologize that the pic of them on my face is blurry, but you get the idea:

Seriously, out of all of the people who are selling sunglasses on the internet I only found ONE SELLER who had the right kind. The good news is that he (or she) seems to have multiple pairs available. Hopefully enough for all of us. The bad news? Everything on eBay has the possibility of disappearing overnight, so get them while you can!

More good news? They're less than $10 shipped. Are they a bit cheap quality-wise? Yes. But they're as sturdy as any other cheap sunglasses you'll find and good enough for a Mad Max costume - and the price can't be beat!

As of March 13th, 2009, this is the auction that has them available:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Aviator-Police-CHP- ... 7C294%3A50

Not sure why the above link is so long, so here's the item number just in case:
400035937838

In case this disappears, they are listed as "Aviator Police CHP Retro Sunglasses" and the sellers name is: saneva
Their email address is [email protected]

Make sure you are getting the right ones as they have other styles availble that say police aviator - but only one that has the trademark oval space in the middle.

P.S. The seller has good feedback and shipped quickly.

(now maybe someone can help me find a metal AFO brace, eBay has been coming up dry)

Hope no one minds... I snatched up those sunglasses. I needed some bad! Thanks for the info, jwrites!

As for the metal AFO brace, it's kind of a longshot. I looked for a long time before I found one. Check for KAFO braces, too. One of those can be adapted to fit on your ankle. Um... you do know that the kneebrace (not the anklebrace) is made from truck tailgate hinges, right?

Yup, thanks to a friend I do have the tailgate hinges, just need the ankle brace. I'll look for KAFO too. Thanks.
Glad you got the sunglasses. My guess is that they have a bunch more - but I'd advise everyone interested try to get them soon just in case.

I grabbed a pair, then sent the seller an email with a link to the original post. We'll see if that makes a few more pairs available.

I should have thought of getting a second pair of sunglasses since they're so cheap, especially since the shipping would have been the same...

As for boots, on Karol's website he mentions a place called West Coast Leather that does replica boots, but those boots now cost $400 and Karol says they're still not exactly right (and for $400 they sure as hell should be). Karol recommends you get some Russian officer boots to use as a base and then get them customized at a local leather shop for accuracy. This may cost in the $200-$250 range after customization.

OR, if you don't want to be exactly accurate, you could look on eBay for some "engineer boots", the kind that have a strap near the bottom and one near the top. They'll look pretty close and will cost you less than $100. Used clothing stores near me in LA sometimes have engineer boots in the $40 range.

Here's the pair I just picked up. They weren't cheap but the same pairs are going for over $100 so I think I got a pretty good deal.

Since the whole Goose outfit is probably going to run $1000, I'm not going to worry about it...

I posted this in another thread but it probably belongs here.

Re: MFP sunglasses

Here are some others that are in the ballpark:
http://www.sunglasswarehouse.com/swavst14.html

http://www.sunglasswarehouse.com/swsust51.html
(that last one above used to be available in a silver frame with smoke colored lenses, but it doesn't look like that style is available anymore).

Hopefully the ones I found on ebay earlier this year will become available again. They weren't perfect, but they're the closest ones I've ever found and they were dirt cheap to boot. Only a couple of fans got them in time before they sold out though.

I set up a search on ebay to alert me when it got matches to that description. If anything comes in, I'll post here.
