The Tattoo

Post by Mad Max 2050 »

OK people,
I know it it common thaught that the tattoo that is worn by Nightrider, Toecutter Bubba Johnny et al. it a T with a small C through it.
But going thru the DVD tonight for something else i noticed this:

Image

Its from the Chase Scene with Max at the start

Quite clearly a PHI, which can also be seen on the phonebox at the caravan jump scene

Image

And even one on the road at the chev wreck

Image

There may be more..

Any thaughts to the significance of this?
There seem to be lots of little hidden slogans/meanings in this movie if you look hard enough...

The movie shows the gang making the symbol in Wee Jerusalem as well

A T with a small C through it is how I understand it too, but would not go as far as saying it's "clearly a PHI": http://www.madmaxmovies.com/forum/viewt ... =40#p73623

Regarding the phone box ... I just noticed some differences when taking another close look at the symbol.
Check out these two DVD frame captures:

Different colour and location of the symbol (different phone box or angle?).
Different time of day (going by the shadows I think the first is afternoon and second is morning).
Missing road works items (wheelbarrow, plank, etc.).
And even one on the road at the chev wreck
As far as I know it's nothing to do with the symbol.
For how the circle got there, see my last paragraph here: http://www.madmaxmovies.com/forum/viewt ... 648#p73415

It is a mystery why, what I always understood was a C over T symbol, looks more like the PHI symbol, but I don't think there is much in the way of hidden stuff.

in the pictures of the phone box,the symbols are definately in different positions.dont know if its a different box though,as one picture clearly has a door facing the camera, but if you slow down the speed, the door is on the other side as sarse and scuttle hit it and the symbol has been blackened out.

I thought the same, that the Tattoo was a T with a C through it for many years.
Back in 2004 when I was designing the 2004 Mad Max Anniversary Auction I discussed the design with Hugh Keays Byrne. I had already made the design with a T & C, However Hugh stated that the Tattoo was in fact "The Burnout Symbol" as seen on the roadway.

So the Design was changed to be the correct version, and here is a copy of the logo. Since the 2004 event Hugh Keays Byrne is now the copyright owner of this design as I transferred the ownership to him.

Guys remember that the phone box was damaged when the march hare hit it?

Image

And remember that the shot was filmed out of sequence.... we can already see the march hare upside down in the back ground, yet the phone box is standing up. When the phone box falls down it falls apart..
The phone box clearly has damage to it and has been re-assembled for that particular shot.
Daresay the door was damaged too much so they turned the phone booth around and resprayed the symbol

I agree that the tattoo is "quite clearly a PHI."
I think the circle with a line through it is as close as you can get to a PHI when drawing it with the rear tire of a motorcycle.
