The dogs of war and their sexuality
The dogs of war and their sexuality
I do not know if some Mad Max fans have already notice it on this forum. In "Mad Max 2", after the death of Golden Youth, Humungus says : " We've all lost someone we love". The message is clear. Golden Youth was not only the boy friend of Wez, but for the leader and his warriors, he was also a lover.

There's some room for debate on that, but I'll agree, Golden Youth was Wez's "Boy Toy".
That said, I'd imagine that the sexual environment in the Gang (Criminal types Isolated out in the Wasteland) was not dissimilar to Prison.
The shortage of available women could eventually force otherwise Not Gay men to accept alternative sources of Sexual Gratification.
Myself, I'd rather just do without.

When I spoke with Vernon I asked him that very question. He says that the boy was his protégé and was not gay at all. He also said that "Wez" was more of a father figure having rescued him around the age of 8 or 9 from certain death.

Re: The dogs of war and their sexuality
That actually makes a lot of sense, .MAD MAX. Remember the scene where Wez is about to shoot the defender against the wrecked buggy? Wez seems to look to Golden Youth before he shoots. To me, it always seemed like Wez was teaching him; showing him 'this is what we do to our enemies.' Just what you would expect a father to teach his son (in this reality, of course) but not a gay lover.
I don't remember where, but I heard that Wez lost his son sometime before Mad Max 2, and when he came across Golden Youth it was an opportunity for him to 'regain' his son, though in a messed up kind of way.
Golden Youth seems almost comatose throughout the movie. He never speaks, never looks around, doesn't even notice the boomerang coming to kill him. He's just out of it. Just what I would expect from a young man who was traumatized by this madman adopting him to be a replacement son.
Humungus' words and Wez's rage are just as valid, if not more so, with Golden Youth being a son and not a gay lover. If Wez was gay, then he could always find another boyfriend. But he could never find another son.
This came up at imdb a while back but I can't find the thread anymore.

It would be interesting to know what George Miller thinks about the relation between Wez and Golden Youth. For me, when Humungus says that everybody loved him, there is no ambiguity. And I do not think that Humungus and his bunch can have paternel feelings like, for example, John Wayne in "The cowboys".
Re: The dogs of war and their sexuality
I don't believe the Humungus was inferring that Golden Youth was more to the gang than his relationship with Wez. He was referring to the whole situation in MM2. Due to the oil crises, and lawlessness of MM1 everyone truly lost someone they love, mother, father, wife, etc.P.F. wrote:In "Mad Max 2", after the death of Golden Youth, Humungus says : " We've all lost someone we love". It was a reference on the entire situation, remember how Papagallo states the same thing to Max in the garage? It was a way to link both groups together on an emotional/human level and how each reacted differently to the change in the world. The gangs took there loss and pain and became violent while the people in the compound chose to remain civilized.
"You think you're special?! We've all lost someone we've loved, but we're still human beings, with dignity. You? You're out there with the garbage... you're nothing."

Hi Desloc. What you say is interesting. I am french. I do not speak english well. But I do not think that Humungus tried to say : "I understand what you feel. We have all lost a cousin, a grandfather, an aunt...". For me, he spoke about Golden Youth.
About the conflict between Max and Papagallo, it is a great scene, a very strong scene.

Re: The dogs of war and their sexuality
Here is an intresting bit of side Trivia about "Golden Youth"
In talking with Vernon during Roadwar N.W., he mentioned that G.Y. was originally a Pizza Delivery Boy who happened to bring lunch to the production offices, long hair and all, and was essentially hired on the spot (not sure if he was hired originally for G.Y., or if he fell into the roll later).
However, I do recall (memeory being what is is) that in the same conversation Vernon mentioned that the part of G.Y. (in very early versions of the screenplay BEFORE much casting had been done) was originally scripted as Female, and it was decided, (probably after finding the "Pizza Boy") that a Male would be more suited for the role, and it plays more heavily on the whole "sexual ambiguity" of the situation, lending more unusual imagery and leaving you thinking more about the whole Muarders life & situation aspect.........
As we are currently doing.....
I guess what I carried away from that is that they left it a bit open ended......... He did stop quite short of saying it was intended to be "Lovers", so I guess it is still up to the viewer to decide for sure (as far as I know anyway).

I'm sorry, don't buy it, IMHO Wez was a pole smoker.....MAD MAX. wrote:He says that the boy was his protégé and was not gay at all. He also said that "Wez" was more of a father figure having rescued him around the age of 8 or 9 from certain death.
