what's up with all those names?
Fifi, Sprog, Roop, Goose, are these names common in Australia? I ask cuz I'm from the U.S. and I always wondered why the heck u would name the leader of the police force Fifi. not to mention a baby named Sprog. I am no downplaying any of the names, I just want to understand the reasons these names were chosen: are they typical of Australian names, are they meant to be futuristic names, etc?

I'm from the US too, so I can't really say. But I remember hearing that in Oz, 'Sprog' is slang for a baby. And I had always thought that Fifi was short for Macafie or something. I think Roop and Goose were just the guy's last names. I think that Charlie, as a rookie, wasn't 'cool' enough to be known by his last name. Max, on the other hand, was just so cool of a name that they stuck with it.

Um... the hint is the fact these names are printed on the side of the car....
"The Dark One"
"Roop"
"Charlie"
"Sarrse"
"Scuttle"
These are all call signs/ nicknames
Sprog in aussie slang does mean baby.... but can also mean something else and very er..... rude?
I'll use it in a sentance to explain..... "The bedsheets had a lot of sprog stains on them in the morning"
Max obviously did have a nick name...
A lot of nick names are derived from a persons name, sometimes their surname will end up being their nickname.
The feel of the movie certainly would be very different if they had used boring names like...... Bruce.... Steve..... Gungadin!
I dont think Fifi was a shortening of his surname... as the radio dispatcher referred to him as "Captain Fifi Macafee".

Fifi is a girl's name in Australia. That probably explains why Fifi MaCafee is a tough guy, he would've had to defend himself quite a bit when he was a kid!

Its kinda like the call signs fighter pilots have like Goose,Big Bopper,Roop they all went by thier nicknames or a shortened version of thier real names.Thats how it is with my brothers Sherrifs dept. they call him Mango short for 'Mangrum' or GUNZ becuase he lifts weights and a slang term for muscles here in the USA is 'guns'
