Hot Rod(1980's movie with Willys in it)

I saw that back when it was first aired on newtwork TV. You are right about the Willys.

If I remember right, Jeff Bridges is a wandering racer with the Willys. He ends up stuck in this town (wrecked the Willys)where the local hotshot (the older brother from 'Eight is Enough'!) runs either a Buick (Skylark GS) or an Olds 442 (I forget which, but both it's 70-72 vintage). Anyway, the hotshot rich kids dad ( I keep thinking it was Robert Culp...?) owns the local AW/Dog n Suds drive in restaurant and is a local legend drag racer (with a museum to boot). The usual story, new guy, local guy, girlfriend, cars, challenges.

Bridges puts his car back together and scavenges some parts from the hotshot's dad's dragrail in the museum (nice touch that was) to get his motor running right.

And of course the new guy beats the smarmy asshole local guy.

I found it. It was not Bridges, but someone who looked alot like him, Greg Henry. And Robert Culp was the dad, T.L. Munn. Grant Goodeve was Sonny Munn.

Apparently the VAST majority of reviews on IMDB consider it one of the best drag racing movies ever.

And no one mentions "Dead End Drive-In" in the Australian flick lists? For shame....(Shame on me, I see it now!)

Or "Tearaways" (NZ) with the Chrysler?

And "Cannonball" (not Cannonball Run or it's sequels). David Carradine was in it. Think Gumball Rally with a lit violence (but not the Gore) of DeathRace 2000.

Gran Prix

And for the bikies...

"Little Fauss and Big Halsy".

"Silver Dream Racer"

Hey ... I had Dead End Drive-in on my list ... I worked on it and I'm even in it ... if only passingly!

I don't know Tearaways but suspect it's the film released here (in Oz) as Snakeskin.

If i'd known about a month ago, there was about 20 copies in the bin at sanity record store in melbourne. it'd be region4 (presumably) but you could have worked around that.

[/quote] G,day, it was the other way around . He built up a dodge or plymouth painted black then had the best rollover ever seen on film. The town hates the rich kid who's father owns local MUNNS ROOTBEER drive in so town helps poor kid build up willy's coupe which was found in country barn .Cheers .
I survived the overnighter days .

Hey Detritus

Not much of a story ... I was working for the production designer ... Larry Eastwood ... at the time and was coordinating the extras that night. Quite a few didn't front so myself and the guy sitting to my left who was the third AD would wrangle the other extras into position then jump into our possies. I was also producing a rock clip at the time for Mondo Rock and cast him as the boy in 'Come said the boy' which we shot a couple of weeks later at Bondi Beach.

By sheer coincidence I also ended up with the original hand drawn artwork for the poster for the film. It was given to me by an ex student who knew I was into car films and was cleaning out an office at one of the film funding bodies.

So here's the scene ...

And here's my ugly head ...

Pete-

You are a verified star now! You can now take your place alongside the other celebrities we have on the board.

I'm not being sarcastic. Sometimes things that seem minor to a person are actually pretty cool to the rest of us. I mean really, I saw the flick right about 20 years ago, was actually impressed by the movie no one over here knows of, and here I am talking to someone who worked on it and was in it.

It may not be directly MM/RW related, but it is part of the impact they have had on our culture. And the reason for this board.

Michael-

Not exactly Illinois...I'm in St. Louis.

We have, or had, Dog n Suds around here, too. But we didn't have the crumbly burger joints.
