I had the unfortunate opertunity to suffer a great loss today. My 1985 Ford Tempo 2.3 liter i-4 bit the big bullet! My dad is giving me a 1986 Plymouth Reliant, and I was wondering if it was possible to make it into a worthy car, so I went on the internet to see what could be done...and was I suprised! Here are some pictures and a link to this guys web page about his warmed over reliant. this is a bad ass car! What do you think? An MFP worthy car?

NO. Not even close. Yes it is fast (if all that is true).

but it is an ugly, FWD, 4-cylinder, shitbox designed by a desparate company to get them out of a hole.

Not worthy. shame on you! :(

It's also unassuming, which could be a plus for the MFP. Their cars can easily be spotted.

Don't forget that the suspension and drivetrain have been modified as well.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a s--tbox though. Yes it's ugly, but everything has its beauty. You just need to know where to find it.

Just because it's FWD and has a 4-cylinder engine doesn't mean it isn't fun, or fast.

Cars with four-bangers coming out of the factory can easily hold their own against the RWD muscle cars from the '70s. A prime example is the Honda Prelude Type SH.

My family had a '93 Intrepid Sedan with a 214-hp V-6, Touring Suspension, 16-inch alloys and S- Speed-Rated tires. It was very fun to drive, and very stable at high speeds. I should know since I've driven it at speeds over 110 M.P.H.

If you have read enough of my posts you know I may disagree with somebody, but respect their position as long as it is backed up by some minimum amount of reason.

A 12-second Reliant (12 seconds in the 1/4 mile) is VERY quick. The fastest production cars (Vipers/911 Turbos) are in the low 13s +/-.5 for the 1/4.

However, is it Max worthy?

1) High-strung 4 cylinder vs Low-Rpm V8

I've driven both, MY preference is power down low.

2) RWD vs FWD--There is no question which is more fun. FWD burnouts are just not as fun, and you cant snap around the tail with the throttle, it limits you cornering acceleration.

3)SOUND. Remember MM start scene. It would not be the same, even if you installed a 4" fart pipe like every stupid Honda Civic you see. Nothing is quite the same as the V8 Rumble.

To recap, a frightening fast K-Car is intersting, and would blow the doors off everything 4-wheeled I have ever owned, but I do not see it as interceptor quality.

see ya on the road, skag!
