Weapons and Ammunition

Post by Freeway Warrior »

If the Mad Max universe started a few years from now, what types of weapons, besides melee-type,

would you expect to be available to most road warriors? How long (years, months, or even weeks)

would those supplies of arms and ammunition would last until depleted (assuming production plants

have been destroyed)?

I would think that fire type weapons would continue to exist in a cruder, larger form. Gun powder comes from natural resources and ingenious individuals could combine natural black powder with found items such as pipes, rocks, etc... to create canon type weapons. (Think "Kirk vs. the Gorn" on Star Trek). Other propellants such as methane or grain alcohol could be used to fire these weapons as well.

Of course, the usual array of hurling or catapult type weapons made from car leaf springs, cables and the like would be prevalent as well.

If your planing on buying any type of firearm get a Ruger Mini-14. its a real cheap but dependable gun. it shoots a .223 and you can outfit it to wazoo. I'd get a 40 round mag and maybe a tri-burst trigger and about 1000 rounds. of coarse you can't buy 100 of those at once. i would go out and buy a semi .22, something cheap for shooting animals. 22s are a 12 year olds BB gun but if aimed well can be deadly. But if the shit hits the fan i dont think you might find yourself being able to hold onto that gun to long. i'd buy a crossbow. because after you run out of ammo all you're left with is a fancy $400+ club.

I would get a pistol and a rifle in 22, seeing that there is more of that calibre sold every year than almost everything else combined. I would also want atleast one twelve gauge shotgun (probably a remington 870 pump) an AK-47, or something like it and a scoped rifle for long shots.

But if I could only have one it would be a bolt action 22 rifle or a good twelve gauge pump with both a long and short barrel, plenty of ammo available for both world wide. Good calibres to stock would be .45ACP(pistol)9mm luger(most popular pistol cartridge world wide,308(7.62NATO),223(5.56NATO),7.62X39mm(AK-47)22LR,9mm luger, all types of 12 gauge shells. Crossbow would be good too! Lots of extra bolts though sometimes they get stuck!(hehehe)

If your interested in gun talk try out Frugal Squirrels Homepage for Patriots, Gun Owners And Survivalist's. They have great forums and people to answer your questions. You have to register to post though. Later, John.

If my link didn't work just type "Frugal Squirrel" at yahoo.

1. Hinged boxlid full of stars to puncture tires so once simple cable is pulled, gravity drops hinged lid to dump stars on road (mighta taken care of some of those in the opening of MM2).

2. Hole drilled through rear of tailpanel so Mark 19 grenade machinegun can chuck ojives behind.

3. Metal spikes mounted / welded on the rear so if being chased, one slams brakes and it punctures radiator of car behind it.

4. Compressed air launched syringes (some rusty perhaps) full of blood and other fluids from carrion and KIA's.

Just a few suggestions from the dark side...

My personal weapon (Gun) of choice would be a twelve guage pump. Barrel cut to 1/2 inch longer than the end of the ammo tube. (For home defense I prefer rubber buckshot. 0% penitration at 6 feet.)

Go to the sporting goods dept. or a gun shop. Look at what they have in stock. 'Round here, you'd find more than half the ammo is 12 guage, 9mm or 30.06 (Can't find 410 for NOTHIN' here)

Reloadable would be best. Eventually (It'd take a few years) factory made ammo would be depleted, and you'd have to make your own. Black powder would be the next fashion. Charcoal, sulfur and saltpeter are all found in nature, and anywhere you find a wrecked car you're bound to find some lead wheelweights. A little ingenuity and work you can make your own ammo.

Bows and crossbows are very good, and have re-useable ammo, BUT every time you fire that arrow you stand a good chance of losing or breaking it. Skills in making weapons and armor would be as valuable as anything left over from civilization.

Steve Pilant posted some ideas on car based weapons. Here's one: Airbags. Attach a couple to the rear of your car. Glue nails, broken glass, sharp stuff to the surface (I'd use skills learned in 8th grade pottery class to make a ceramic fragmentation surface) Rigged to a toggle switch inside the car this could make for a really bad day for any pursuing motorist.

(I'm not kidding! This would work!)

I'd want a lite saber, and one of those throwing disk from Tron.

OK, besides the usual "arrows, flamethrowers, guns," you could build yourself a poor man's

railgun. This being a linear electric motor. This has the advantage of being able to fling anything

mildly ferrous at your enemy with great velocity. The only tricky bit to it is the sequencing of

the capacitor discharge into the electromagnets, which accelerate the projectile down the length

of the weapon. If you knew what you were doing, you could even build a crew-served fully

automatic variant. But it's been a while since I was into post-apocalyptic weapons systems,

so don't quote me on it.
