Would you, or wouldn't you.

Post by Chase Bansi »

After some of the recent Cars of the Stars topics I went back through the history again myself. It ocured to me that the original car is the one Interceptor that looks the least like itself now with all the awesome replicars. In a strange way that gives it a value because of that.

So my question is if there were ever a way to restore it in any way shape or form, would you, or wouldn't you?

If I hit the lottery, I'd certainly make CotS an offer to fund and supervise a restoration to 100% movie accuracy.

(And guess who I'd at least TRY to hire to do the job.) Image

Question is.. Mad Max 1 Version or Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior version?

I think I'd go MM1. Maybe talk 'em into exhibiting it next to a 100% MM2 Replica. (Well Marked and documented as a replica only)

Oh, and if I funded the resto, there'd damned well better be Photgraphs allowed.

Ditto to what Foxtrot wrote above.

Anything done to the car after the filming had finished, though with good intentions, is inaccurate (according to what I've read from people who've visited CotS) and should be corrected by someone who actually cares about doing a proper job on it. A fan would be the prefect choice and I think I know who you mean too Foxtrot, but he's soon to be transported out of the UK for undisclosed crimes (stealing a loaf of bread I suspect, don't laugh, some of the criminals sent to Oz were sentenced to that for less!)

I like the idea of a MM2 version beside the original, since I prefer that version just a fraction over the MM version, (Hey Foxtrot, I'll go halves with you, to help fund it!.... If I win the lottery of course.) but I think I'd opt for leaving the museum visitor trying to decide which is the original and which is the sympathetic replica. I bet they'd have a tough time deciding which is which, rather than clearly indicating it's a repli-car

I'd actually go the other way and restore it to how it was at the end of MM2, (I'm guessing it still has the tanks and gutted interior) and put an accurate replica of the original next to it. I think that because the one car was used for both films, it would make more sense to restore it to how it was at the end of filming, and I mean without the nose-cone, with any dents and bruises (it looks like there's a bit of bog fallen off the right rear flare in one shot) and of course all the red dust all over it. The replica would of course look just as it did when Max drove it out of the garage for the first time- all shiny & new.

Id have to agree... the car needs to be restored the what it looked like at the end of MM2. My personal choice i guess.... though im still sitting on the fence as to weather i would put the cut down nose cone which was fitted at the start of the movie...

If only i had put my lotto ticket in....

How d'you know I ain't referrin' to you? Image

Actually, there are several here who've done very nice replicas that surpass the original's current condition in regards to Movie Accuracy.

So it'd be a toss up as to who's done the best job on their own cars..

And I'm actually not sure who all's done their own work on their cars.

Even if they've paid others to do tha actual work, in most cases they've done the research and made an effort to do their replicas correctly.

To be honest, I really wasn't being very speciffic.

Perhaps I should have phrased it as "And guess who be on the list of builders I'd try to hire for the job"?

It was an educated guess!!,I just hope now that Biker was in fact referring to me, his description does fit my profile!

As for the Interceptor, the main thing is the car survived and was saved from the crusher. It was unique back then and as Chase pointed out due to it's unique look now it will probably always look different from any replicas built and have it's own value due to this.

I suppose trying to restore it back to it's movie look would only take it further away from the 'original car',I still think it would've been best left as it was found but back then there wasn't the same interest in it and I suppose that having it tidied up as it was (restored is too strong a word) at the time was probably the only sensible thing to do.

Hi Adrian, Yeah I still have my email address, I got your two emails, I'll reply to you right after hitting post reply here. Sorry, just a tad busy dealing with the opening of my new website at the moment.

I think this thread could be in danger of becoming a "My interceptor replica is better than yours!" If it got any further. I assumed, rightly or wrongly, that Foxtrot was referring to you Adrian since the car's in the UK and, for the moment you are too, seems natural that anyone involved in it's good restoration should be someone who's already done one, and done it well!

Sheesh ANY replica in your home country has got to be a bonus for the many MM fans in the world to see one. Seeing one is always going to be a highlight in that fans life... it was for me and the replica I saw was superb!

Personally I don't have that big a desire to see the original Interceptor. As interesting as I'm sure it'd be, knowing Mel Gibson arse sat just there once etc etc hasn't the appeal to me it might have for others. If I were building a replica then perhaps my interest would be kindled if I wanted it accurate on certain details. Do you get what I'm trying to say here?

There's a big difference between "tidied up" and "tarted up" Adrian. From what I've read in other thrreads about the Interceptor, all they forgot to add was the fluffy dice and the nodding dog on the parcel shelf! Whoever did the tidy up job must have walked away with a few souvenirs from it including the wide wheels according to the things I've read.

Hi Yep we (Garnt and me) have a standing offer to Cars Of Stars to restore the car back to Mad Max 2 presentation for FREE, fee nose cone like in the start of MM2 and free labor.

We first offered about 3 years ago.

Dr Nelson knows of this, he is just not particulary concerned that the car is not correct.

Perhaps one day.

Cheers
