Hi all,

I love your website!

I'll have lots of questions about making this thing, but the first is about the leg brace. The tailgate hinge makes sense, but the rest is a bit fuzzy. In watching The Road Warrior, it looks like the lower part is made up of wrenches welded on. Could this be right? and then what's the rest of it?

It appears to me that it is a real leg brace, with a bit of stuff added to it such as the knee pad. Max would very likely have had medical attention at some point after the battles at the end of MM1 and could have got it then or found it in his travels.

The lower part is an ankle-foot brace. I have seen a couple of them & they really seem to fit the part. The knee-pad, contrary to popular belief, is actually a separate piece strapped onto Max's knee. (There is actually a short clip in the film where Gibson is not wearing the kneepad.)

The knee brace is: tailgate hinges attached to an ankle-foot brace by machine screws or bolts, and then leather belts attached to the hinges. That's it.

Other than ebay, where is a good source to find these old-school AFO braces?

That's a good question.

My friend was able to find one at a medical office in Hollywood. I may be down there in a week. I'll let you know.

The brace is actually a medical brace that was used for polio patients in the 30's 40's and 50's. The owner fo this website found the actual model of leg brace that was used in Mad Max 2: TRW and bought one off EBay they show up from time to time.

I am the said owner of the mentioned website, and as much as I would like to take the credit for finding a replica kneebrace from MM2, it just isn't so. Karol, from http://www.madmaxmodels.com, has it right: the kneebrace is made from a truck's tailgate hinges. You can clearly see this after Max crashes the tanker. My kneebrace is not truly accurate, and I plan on finding/making another one from tailgate hinges. Maybe some of the straps on mine could be used again, but the main (vertical) pieces aren't accurate.
