The Postman

I know it isn't Mad Max related, but has anyone else seen the other kind of post apocalyptic movie "The Postman" with Kevin Costner?

I think it is a cool movie, and what makes it even cooler is the location of some of the scenes were filmed not too far from where I live.

I went up there last Sunday, to Metaline Falls, WA and had a look around. In the movie they film that town as both Pineview Oregon, and Benning Oregon.

Pretty surreal to walk around on the place Bethlehem's men shot down the townspeople, and where they burned down the post office, and to drive through where they fired the cannons into the town and where the Postman made his triumphant escape up into the mountains on the horse with the woman.

Gorgeous landscape up there, very scenic. I even took the more scenic route and came over on the road from Priest Lake (from the south east), and exited across the bridge (where the Postman first visits Pineview) and back south to Spokane.

Don't forget his over buget Waterworld in the post apocalyptic genre. Costner did a good job as the Postman, I have to give him some credit. Postman also avoids the question of "what happened" and deals more with the aftermath of the colapse of society.

BEST LINE: Postman looks at the Dam City mayor (Tom Petty) and says "Didn't you use to be some one famous?"

Wish my Zippo lighted like the one he found in the postvan. Maybe Zippo paid Costner a wad of cash to endorse their lighter and not some disposable Bic which would have worked after 20 years!

I liked The Postman and Waterworld films ... just a tad light on car appearences but great for firing the imagination! And 100 times better than some of those mid 80's Italian post apocolyptic films that got churned out.

That quarry with the lake scene was funny when they showed Universal Soldier and the projectionist got stoned by the audience into showing The Sound of Music instead. I laughed my guts up at that!

"You spelt Tyranny wrong...." Now what was that bad guys name again? Sheesh it's gone.

That city on the dam (Bridge City) was actually built for the film on Boundary Dam, north of Metaline Falls. I went up there too, a couple years ago, but I think in the post 9/11 world they upped the security around it and there are lots of gates and signs and restrictions, where before I think you could get tours and what not. The dam does provide a lot of power for the Seattle area, so I guess that is good reason for the extra security.

Washington State is a backdrop for several movies and TV shows... Sicily Alaska is Actually Rosalyn WA for Northern Exposure, and they filmed the opening scene of Twin Peaks at Snoqualamie Falls East of Belleview. Both are just East of Seattle on I-90 about 30 minutes drive-time. When I was going to school there, they were filming some Sly Stallone movie down by the Waterfront. They closed the 99 Viaduct and some of the streets under it to do the filming. It was supposed to be set in Chicago, but they were using old retired California HP police cars and filming it in Seattle. My girlfriend and I came out of McDonalds on 3rd St and started to cross when we walked unexpectedly right at Stallone and his posse. Everybody scattered in the Exodus and I walked right between Sly and his wife(?), with a bodyguard on either side of them. Man is he short. My girlfriend was clueless to the whole thing and I had to point him out to her...she didn't believe me...lol. Just North in Vancouver BC, is another popular filming spot...like Highlander, The Series for seven years. Cool area in general, and no, it doesn't rain ALL the time...mostly in the Winter.

...The delapadated old service station where Costner's caracter finds the cigarette machine at the very begining , is THE SAME delapadated service station that Early Grayce has takeout chineese food in.. from the movie KALIFORNIA......I believe it's on Old Route 66..?...

I have Waterworld and The Postman ,both are good movies but I like Waterworld better than The Postman.

I lso live near where they filmed some scenes from 'The Postman'.As I understand it,they filmed quite a few scenes just east of Estacada,Oregon.They also used our one-stoplight town to film "Saving Grace' and it's sequel,'Mean Streets'.they are all in the local rental places here,but I've never seen any of them.When they were filming 'Mean Streets',they needed older cars to make it look like the mid/late 1970's and they wanted me to take my 67 Mustang fastback and put some old Cragars on it.I was to busy and told them no thanks and went to work.Cheers,Bill

The movie isn't bad, but God's sake, if you like it, read the book. Only about half the story is in the movie and I'm not talking about more of what's in the movie. The 8's were led by ex-soldiers. Bio-engineered ex-soldiers, perfect soldiers (almost...). And then there is 'the old man'.....all of this stuff they left out of the movie is what makes the "Universal Soldier" reference so darn funny!
