Camaro Vs. Mustang?

Post by The Michelin Man »

Hi Gang.

I was wondering, in the battle for poor man's sport car supremacy, who do

you think has consistently made a better car, Camaro or Mustang, and why?

I ask because whenever I look up web sites pertaining to either car, the fans of

either car seem to make a habit of belittling the other. I was wondering what

the real truth is.

In a recent Car and Driver Magazine TV show they compared the 99 Cobra, Camero SS

, Trans Am. I can't remember all the particulars, but the Camero did beat the Mustang

in top speed and 1/4 mile while the Trans Am kicked ass in the handling department.

But as we all know, these tests are done by different drivers in different condtions all over the States

and I'm sure that some other group has found the Mustang to be better.

All in all these cars seem to be beating their competitors by very small margins, if ya want to impress me, tell the story of how one cars top speed beat another by 30 MPH

or that it was 1 sec faster in the 1/4 mile.

The camaro SS was the favored car dude! By a small margin though. It was the handling.

I've seen some examples of both that require considerably more than a poor man's income. Many of the classics are quite pricey indeed.

I think you will get a lot of opinions falling to either extreme - the blue oval camp or the bowtie camp.

As in anything, there are good and bad examples of both. Interestingly enough, Larry Shinoda (designer) had his hands on both Fords/Chevy's including the 69/70 Mustang sportsroof as well as 63 split window vette, Mako shark vette and Camaro.

Unfortunately he passed away not long back, but not before leaving us with some well loved cars.

To the Camaros credit, I think of examples such as the Yenko and the nice looking barn doors over the headlights with skunk stripes on the early Camaros. Shelby had already done stripes earlier though with the GT350 Mustangs.

To the Mustangs credit, the 1970 Mustang Trans Am Boss 302's whipped ass on Roger Penske's Z28's even though Roger had the Camaros bodies acid dipped to make them lighter.

There were many plain Jane grocery getters in both Camaro & Mustang, so I'm concentrating on just the higher performance older cars.

At the end of the day, I would have to choose the Mustang over the Camaro for the following reasons:

1. It was first and broke new ground.

2. Shelby's involvement made the Shelby Mustangs true boulevard brawlers and performers. Rolling art.

3. The Camaro in later years shared its base body with Firebird etc, just different fenders etc used to set them apart whereas Mustang was basically it's own car.

4. The ram air shaker - a very cool concept and racing touch.

5. Racing history.

For certainly had its boner with the Mustang II during the oil crisis in the 70's.

It is also interesting to note that when Bunkie Knudson left GM and came to Ford and the 71 Mustang came out, it had many GM styling cues such as the flush door handles like on the XB Falcon instead of the handle as before. The windshield wiper placement at the back of the hood on the 71 was another GM styling cue.

Bunkie turned the quarterhorse into a Clydesdale. :-)

I always thought the 71 Mustang looked like it had its ass chopped off prematurely - a bit boxy. I much prefer the ducktail 69/70 rear better as well as the classic 3 taillights on each side.

Things I hate about classic Mustangs:

1. Original heater cores as they leak. (go aftermarket)

2. Front grease fittings hard to get to, so often they squeak and suspensions are in need replacement and/or someone has cut a hole in the shock tower to gain access to the grease fitting with a grease gun. (put right angle grease fittings in when replacing the suspension!)

3. Ford power steering systems.

Regs,

Steve
Gotta hand it to ya treasure - the last of the V8 interceptors. Woulda been a shame to blow it up...

How about a Mopar, anyways did you guys know for the movie "Vanishing Point," (where a guy tries to get a '70 Dodge Challenger to San Fran from Denver in 24hrs and he crashes it in the end), well in the part where the car actually crashed, they used a '69 Camaro, so not to waste the Challenger.

LOL what a great idea!!

I actually saw in real life one of the 2 Challengers used in the movie.

: I know the answer. Now I like Ford and everything but the Mustang is waaayyyy overrated and the same goes to the Camaro. So I think the 1970 Dodge Challenger is the best in my opinion. It has an engine not even Ford will attempt to install (440 ci Six-Pack) Mustangs generally have 302's (like my 72 Mercury Comet) or 351's for 70's models excluding some Mustangs II's and I think Chevy installed generally 350's in their Camaro's from 67-80's not sure.

::::---> I used to own a 67 fastback mustang, now I own a 97SS camaro. When I was shopping for a new rod. I test drove three or four 96-97 cobra mustangs. I have always been a ford fan mind you. But when I drove that 97SS for the first time I fell in love. That thing has some balls. Its lt1 motor makes all kind of torque! That means you can roast the tires at the drop of a dime. Ive raced mustangs with gears and induction, cam, and various other mods--guess who wins?? Me! Not to start a flame, mustangs can be made fast, but the camaro stock is hard to beat! My car has dual factory cats BTW, Just wait till I run hooker long tubes without any cats!

I still think that the Caramo is a much better HP car out of the "box" than the Mustang. There are a lot of Warmed up Mustangs, but most of them have to supercharge them just to keep up with the Caramo, maybe because the Caramos have 5.7L compared to the 5.oL or 4.6L of the "Tangs".

I have to agree with the fact that off the showroom floor, Camaros are a bit faster, but look at the engine differences. The Mustang's 4.6 can stay pretty close to the Camaro's 5.7 V8. We all know what happens when Ford put the 5.7 (351C) in the new Stangs (i.e. Cobra R). As a Mustang owner I would say that up until 1973 the Mustang was a much better car than the Camaro. The Camaro wins in my mind from 73 until the mid 80's when the 5.0's HP was increased. But from 94 until present, it has been the Camaros who have the advantage.
