MFP sirens
I was just wondering, and it probably has been brought up before, but are the MFP sirens in Mad Max the same as the real Australian police force sirens (in 1978, of course)? I saw an episode of Water Rats about a month ago and the sirens sounded wicked--like a modern day version of the MFP sirens, so i figured the MFP sirens must have just been regular Australian sirens. Am i wrong?

Well i dont know about the other states in Oz, but here in West Oz , police cars back in 78 didnt have any red lights, just the blue , and they were alot smaller than the rather large ones that were on Max's yellow interceptor, i cant recall what the sirens sounded like back then but i think they were similar sounding

I dont live over there but I looks like those magnet flashers that they put on mail cars and the like.
As of back in the 70's it looks and sound kind of like the old siren and lights they used to put on ambulances, cant say much though cause my MM memory is fading and I am going to need a fix soon. So if it brings up a thought I will let ya know.

NSW (state) Cops cars have hollywood style bars of cop lights. they used to have 1 red and 1 blue revolving lights like max (but skinnier and taller) but then they wanted to be cowboys and got their hero lights
from memory our cops have 2 sirens, a fast one and a slow one. one of these I am sure is heard in mad max 1

Well here in Queensland back in the early 80s they did not sound similer to MM at all...although
remembering back to an Aussie TV show called "Cop Shop" the siren sounds they used in the program were similer to MM1. With reguards to the flashing lights, the large rotating lights on Maxs yellow XB as far as im aware were not used in any aussie states at all...The only one that comes close are the Western(or Southern..i cant remember)Australian Police force...which still uses a large rotating blue light similer to Maxs , but with only 3 internal lights, not four, as in maxs. I suspect they were possibly imported from the US?? The smaller blue ones as seen on big boppers or march hares car were used as standard nearly across the whole of australian police cars during the 70s/80s. Hella still make these lights as far as im aware here in australia.

Yeah im from the states and have seen lights like that and the siren noise, but why import. It has to be from something over there.
Do yall have those blue light specials at your department stores? Just an idea.

Well yea it could...but i know of no australian company that makes that style of light.. Hella Australia used to make one with two internal lights and a metal base, (Eg..in MM1 at the night accident sence with roop, fifi and max..look at the kenworth(?) towtruck it has a yellow light on it), but they stopped making them years ago.
Maybe they were specially made for the movie?..guess youll have to ask George Miller or the people who made the car for the film...!
All of the light bars used on aussie cop cars are imported...made by Code 4?

Um no...You can only buy them from certain distributers..the blue ones are harder to come by
and need to be ordered in..no one keeps them in stock..least not in my town anyway. Actual sirens can also be bought and i know only of two places that sell them here in my town... but how the hell do i describe the siren noise?? hahaha...

I bought a blue light from the North American signal company that looks darn close to the ones in the movies. It has three lenses, which I believe is what the movies versions had.

Well if you wanna be picky maxes had 4 lenses i believe..
Ive seen one made by the north american signal company with four lenses..but the lenses used were the wrong type...they were a sealed beam type
where as the ones in maxs appears to use halogen globes with a metal or plastic reflector behind it.....

Who is gonna walk up to your Interceptor replica and say, "What a piece of crap, it has the wrong light lenses in the sirens! They're using 3 sealed beam type where as the 4 ones in maxs was used halogen globes with a metal or plastic reflector behind it! That just ruined the whole thing!" I say who cares, I wouldn't have noticed.
If I were to look at someones replica, I'm not gonna care if it one minor thing wrong in the lense.
