Hi.
Does The Monaro Pursuit Special have blocks in the back, raising the back end, or are the back tires just bigger than the front, or both? Lastly, do air scoops really make that much of a difference in performance, the most noticeable feature of that car is obviously the scoop.

Well most hood alterations are either to fit something bigger underneath, bring in fresh (cool) air for better performance (vs HOT under hood air, or
release hot air. The monaro "bump" is a pretty strange one. It is about the right size for a blower or blower scoop, or two
carbs on a high-rise intake manifold, but the lack of an opening at the front is curious. You want the scoop in the front to
take advantage of the "ram" effect of the cars forwards speed. Facing rearward would actually cause some negative
pressure, decreasing efficiency. However,Some cars (US chevy camaros and chevelle) has a "cowl induction" hood that
had a mild rise (2-4") over the middle third of the hood that went all the way back to the windshield, where it opened up. The
area at the base of the windshield is actually a high pressure area when the car is moving, which gave the ram effect even
though the opening faces the "wrong" way. On The Monaro, however, the scoop appears too far forward to take advantage
of the HP area if the scoop faces rearward. My best guess? It is a movie, and the car people slapped something on the
hood to make it look cool (it worked for me) along with some funky tailpipes out back.
Jason(?) said there IS an opening up front--I must admit after +15 viewings I have not seen it.
To get back to your question, yes, a properly designed scoop or inlet can help performance--the most obvious way is that the car breathes cooler DENSER air. Density is the key. It is well known that cars perform measurably better on cold day (once warmed up). Seat of the pants you may not notice this , but track times will bear it out. The other scoop factor is the so-called "ram" effect--the cars forward velocity cause high presure (and greater density) for the intake air, and thus gives greater power.
How Much? I would venture about 5% Max. By the way , it is funny how many cars have fake scoops.
Even the Maxs yellow XB is equipped with fake scoops. When the hood is up in the begginning. note 1) No openings visible under the hood and 2) I THINK you can see a very STD looking air cleaner on the motor--BUT maybe I am confusing this second part with big boppers.

In the foreground you can see half of the front of the blower up close which has kind of a mesh over the opening, NOT a big hole like you would expect.
I forgot if I saw this on the widescreen version or not, so it might have cut it off in the non-widescreen version.
