You should check out early issues of FANGORIA magazine, After ROAD WARRIOR was released over in US. every kid was writing in asking what kind of car MAX drove, and typical bloody yanks refused to believe it was an Aussie car, thought they were the only ones to make cool 'muscle cars', they were calling it a TORINO, JAVLYN, someone even called it a CHARGER. it took a bloody NEW ZEALANDER to set the record straight.

Greetings. As anyone who owns a Falcon here in the states can testify, Us Yanks can't figure out what they are...most of the time. There's a few though that just can't believe what they're seeing...even in stock (mostly) running form and go rather ape when they see it. When I'm cruising or at cruise-in, the most common guesses for it are:


1. 70-71 Torino (side glass and rear billboard)


2. 70 Cuda (Because of the single headlight grille and the honeycomb surrounds)


3. 68-70 Javelin (similar proportions)


4. 68-70 Chevelle (Blown/bulged quarters)


5. AMC Matador (Can't see it...scratching head)


6. 71-73 Mach I prototype (bonnet/hood scoops)


7. 71 Maverick (side glass and rear billboard?)


8. Some cool custom mix of all the rest


I love pulling up in the left lane here in the States at a light and seeing peoples reactions...everything from "He's on the wrong side" to people honking and giving me the thumbs up, to one guy mouthing the word's "What the F>>>?!" My favorite though, is when people are passing, and can't see anyone in it until they're almost beside you. I don't like the fact that because it is so different, it causes some mayhem when people aren't paying attention to the road. Scar can attest to this...eh? It's definitely worth it though...one man carshow.

Many people I've spoken to about the car were simply unaware that Australia built anything but British style small economical cars..


Myself, I used to argue with my friends who also was CONVINCED that the cars were customized from Yankee Iron by George Barris in California, then shipped back to Oz.


He was certain that the BoB was an AMX, Nightrider's car was a Camaro and the Yellows were Mustangs!





Me, I knew these machines had to be Aussie Iron. Simply for the fact that I know how much it costs to transport cars around domestically. Overseas would be ridiculous


Add to that the sheer COST of custom bodywork and you've blown the entire budget...


Exactly what KIND of Australian iron I couldn't say. Wasn't until an paragraph article in Car Craft Magazine regarding the Falcon GTHO that I had a even a remote idea.


It wasn't until I discovered the Internet that I heard of XA's, XB's & So On....





But in the same vein... When I first got my Javelin, Many of my friends had no idea what IT was.


Some said Mustang, some said Corvette (which I took as Insult), I even had one convinced it was a Jaguar.





It was simply outside of their realm of experience.

I always thought it was a modified Torino GT or a Mercury Cyclone, and the sedans were something like Mavericks. I used Torinos and streched AMC AMX's for the models I built as a kid. I admit I didn't know what they were either until I went to school in Seattle. One day in rendering class, I put up a rear 3/4 view of the BOB in MM2 running gear for critique. The instructor walked along the board and stopped on mine, and stared at it for a long time. He then turned around and asked who's it was while pointing at it. I raised my hand and said it was mine. He asked what I thought it was and I didn't know. He then told me it was an Aussie 73 XBGT Falcon...and he was one of the blokes from Ford America, Mustang Division, sent Down Under to help out in the Styling Dept. on the XA and XB. His name is Albert McNea if anybody has ever heard of him. He told me how the modelers would style the car in clay, then the engineers would come in and put wooden pegs in the areas that were too low for the engineering package. The next day, the stylists (antiquated term for designers) would come in and pull the pegs, or push them down further, wreaking havoc for everyone. He's retired now and living in Washington State, just East of Seattlelast time I knew.
