Planning to buy a B/B Falcon
Planning to buy a B/B Falcon
Ok all you replicar gurus... the new job seems to be working out and it's time to start planning for some toys. #1 on the list is my dream car. No, not a Ferrari, Lamborghini, GT Ford or Z06. It's a black on black 73-75 Aussie Falcon, done up Interceptor style. I suppose there are enough resources on the web to get me started, but I wanted to hear from the folks that have done it first. (I have the Mark Scarselli "Thunder from Down Under" edition of Hemmings too.) Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yikes! No responses. Well, I'm limited to two connections (in Sydney) right now, and I'm talking to a couple of folks here that have imported 'em, but I wan't to make sure I do it right. Cripes, this is turning out to be tougher than I thought....

Big Guy,
First time I've seen this post. You have lots of options. You can email me direct if you like and get my two cents.

heya drewski, I've done the importing thing myself. I'm not saying it's the way to go though as there are pros and cons no matter how you handle it. Give me a shout at doug @ madmaxcar.com

Hey Drewski, good on ya,mate, you will have a BLAST with a BoB,I sure do.Where are you located at?There is plenty of info here or at my Yahoo groups site http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/madmaxreplicacars2/
and all of the importers are on both places. It all comes down to how much ca$h you have to spend and you generally get what you pay for. With the US dollar taking a dive,it's getting more expensive for us to get a good deal, especially since some people now think that even rust buckets are gold because of us silly, rich yanks.Cheers,Bill

There are still good XB coupes that change hands for reasonable money.
There was one on ebay a month or so ago that would have been ideal for a replica builder that sold for A$3700. I was also selling a HQ SS at the same time and struck up an online discussion with the coupe seller exchanging Ebay horror stories and he freely admitted that he'd have taken $3000 as that's what he had it advertised for in a rural local newspaper.
Forget GTs ... they are going through the roof as are Goss specials ... but I looked at a pretty tidy XB GS coupe in a country town (Dungog in the Hunter Valley NSW) that had too much to fix as a resto but wuld be great for a replica. The original owner was asking $3500 and was open to negotiation. But don't forget that there are many things that you'll have to change anyway so that you should avoid paying top dollar for stuff you won't use.
Clearly the challenge you face is that the cars are here and you are there. This is where the exporters come in. They have access to the cars and know the pitfalls of shipping and customs. You have to expect that as they are commercial operations driven by both passion and profit they will charge you more than the cost to them. That's just the way it is.
An alternative approach would be one that many Australians follow when importing Comaros and Mustangs which is to combine a holiday with a buying trip. I would expect that this would cost around the same as using an importer. You miss out on their experience particularly with shipping. Also you run the risk of coming all this way and there being nothing for sale ... which would be a bummer to say the least!
Either way good luck with the quest.
