UK Replicas (2)

Post by glennwalsh »

Hi.

I'm new to the forum and at the minute I'm looking into the possibility of building a replica MFP patrol car (like Max's yellow one). I have been offered a re-built Ford 3-litre V6 for very low money and am wondering what is the best base car to go after, is a MK1 Granada or a MKIII Cortina closest to a Falcon. The Cortina looks similar. I live in Northern Ireland so I am probably going to have to come to the mainland to get a suitable car (I did this with my last car, so not too stressful!), so I want to get the right thing.

All help appreciated.

I'd say the cortina is the closest, come to think of it it's very close, i believe there is a guy over here who's actually on with one and has also purchased the correct flares from gordon hayes, if you want more info, e-mail madmax2050 from this forum, he's been in touch with the guy.

A cortina would be quite a good match. Did they do a two door one? You'll have to post piccies of the alteration process.

A two door MkIII Corty was available, but it was fairly rare. Both 2 and 4 door versions can still be found for sale in magazines such as Classic Ford, Classic Car weekly and Practical Classics.

The MKIII is very close in looks to the Falcon XA/XB/XC, and the shape lends itself well to the MFP look. And the V6 will fit!

Ford actually made a few 3 litre turbocharged (!) MKIII Cortinas for evaluation by the police...

They did do a 2 door but it wants to be a 4 door for the yellow pursuit, the door shape and styling is very close.

I remember seeing a hillman avenger in about 1982 in pursuit colours, that looked very effective as well.

Yeh, go for the Cortina.

I've seen some pictures of the one that's going to be a Big Bopper Coritna with the wheel arch frares and the roof spoiler on, and it looks good

The general shape etc is quite similar to the falcon. It seems to follow the right lines and curves in the right places.

Happy hunting.

There's a beaut for sale in this months street machine, 1972 mk3 cortina fitted with scorpio V6 on carbs, 4 speed manual, spax gas shocks plus plenty more, the down side is it's UKP2750, OR UKP2250 without the 17inch boy racer wheels. The good news is FREE ROAD TAX.

John, have you got any pics of the cortina project?

Thanks for the advice guys. I have seen a few suitable MKIIIs in Classic Ford, all MOT'd runners at around the UKP500 mark, which would be good. Yes, it would need to be a 4 door with the 4 round headlights. I won'y be doing anything much until next winter, this summer I'm moving house, but if it goes ahead I'll keep a photo diary.

Cheers!

A pre 1973 GT or GXL has a four headlamp front end. This can appaently be retrofitted to any 1970-76 Cortina with some simple wiring modifications. Looks much better than the later oblong lamps.

The pre-1973 has a really excellent Mustang style dashboard as well...

That's what i like about the old fords over here, they had simple dashboards but stylish, not a million miles away from our yanky cousins and as i've since found, oz fords as well.

Hey John, if it's ok with andy, why not post those cortina pics on here, they would be a great help to any fans thinking of starting a replica not using a falcon and i'm sure would help glennwalsh make a choice of vehicle for his project. Not only that but there worth a look for anyone not familiar with our old cortinas.
