Just to clarify:

A) I think most Aussie actors do an American accent fine.

B) I know you think most Americans can't do a decent Aussie accent. OK, I believe you.

C) I was asking if we sound as weird to you as some of you do to us. LOL!

nope. when i was real young, i mean like 4 or 5 watching seseme street the american accent did sound really wierd , but since your movies and shows monopolised our televisions my entire life , the accents sounded less and less funny, now it's just a natural sounding thing.

do we really sound that funny, i love the aussie language.

Let's put it this way. I had always heard the dubbed version of Mad Max up until I got a bootleg English tape back in '95. When I first heard the Nightrider, milk shot out my nose, metaphorically speaking. I wasn't alone in my shocked reaction to hearing what amounted to a helium induced psychotic episode.

Sometimes, especially in comparison to the usual low pitched, gruff American action hero stereotype, the Aussie accent comes across as high pitched and nasaly. Not making fun, just an observation. In our own country, the regional accents get some ribbing also. At the risk of starting a civil war, I'll point out that the boyz from New Yawk can't understand y'all down in Jawjuh. And you people from Minnesoooota. How many long 'o's do you have? Us Midwesterners speak perfect King's English, of course. If anyone takes offense, I live off of Hwy Farty-Far. I'll be busy warshing my car.

yeah you should see how nasaly the accents get down here in particular the more 'outback' you get.

but here in tasmania the accents change from suberb to suberb, which is mainly a 'class' thing, but the out in the country down here it is real twangy.

I would hate to have my whole country stereotyped into one phrase like "G'day Mate!" or one goof-ass guy like The Crocodile Hunter. You Aussies would have a communal breakdown if you saw the commercial they play on TV here in the USA for the Hoover Floor Mate vacuum cleaner. I am offended on your behalf!

yeah it ain't fair, though i wouldn't have minded so much if the rest of the world thought we were all dressed in leather, operating along the borders of our crumbling society in suped up pursuit cop cars.

Try telling UNCLE that, with his 'black women' theory.

You're absolutely right about those accents, Mitch! Funny stuff! I'm originally from Chicaaaaahgo and now live in Tennessee and BOY do I get some strange looks when I start talking in public. People will actually interrupt me to say "Where're you from?" Its funny. I never even knew I had an accent until I moved away from home. Now I catch myself all the time.

I also talk with alot of people from the UK on the net and they think all Americans talk like Texans. I never understood that :) Do any UKers and Aussies here think that? I'm just curious.

My wife is from N'awlins and she gets so upset when there's a movie thats supposed to have been filmed in New Orleans and they make them out to have Alabama accents. :)

I think accents from anywhere are the coolest thing. It makes us all so much more interesting.
