MM2/Road Warrior Interceptor Interior Gear

Post by timdp »

This post is the first in a series of posts exploring the contents of Max's car in Mad Max 2/Road Warrior with an eye to finding items to detail the inside of an interceptor. I would imagine that someone has done this research already, but I have not seen the results of any such research.

Took a cruise through the BluRay to pull a bunch of screen shots to see what we could see.

This is just my speculation, so if I got something wrong or you have a different interpretation, comment away!

Part 1. Binoculars and tripod
We will start with the binoculars and tripod that Max uses overlooking the oil compound. The binoculars are probably 10x binocs with short leather strip sling/handle
These are fairly large binoculars, too big to be 6x or 8x nocs. Right eye piece and right front lens frame are missing. Brass center rod. They have a leather sling/handle with a single knot on the right side. He carries them on his belt until the camp overlooking the oil compound. Mounted on the belt by taking the sling over and behind the belt and then coming up on the front of the belt and hooking it over the brass hook (?).

Green tripod
It seems to be a British tripod for a heliograph. The arm holds a secondary mirror. Chain is supposed to have a thread protector cap on the end.

Note the bracket that limits the sling travel about 2/3 of the way down the leg. Max’s tripod also has this feature just to the right of the bottom of the hatchet handle.

Sling seen crossing his left boot ankle, then coming up to the sling bracket and looking over the left keg towards the axe.

Interceptor gear Part 2: Sleeping gear and stowage.
Gray military surplus blanket with white speckles and hole cutout for head.
Skins: Black and white cow hide, brown and white cow hide and sheepskin. He is sitting/sleeping on them.
There appear to be two leather bags to his right.
Smaller soft leather bag/ backpack in foreground, large squarish leather bag/ backpack behind it.

Blanket poncho

Black and white cow skin under Max and brown and white cow skin just to the left of dog.

Sheepskin and leather bag

Leather bags. Looks like a surplus leather strap for the square leather bag?

Interceptor gear Part 3: Manacles, camo nets and hatchet.
Full set of manacles, leg irons and small coil chains with two different lengths of brass case padlocks. Cuffs for the hands appear to be newly fabricated props, but the ones for the feet have a pretty good patina on them and look commercially made.
Max apparently has three camo nets in the car:
Small camo net
Large camo net with scrim
Large camo net with little to no scrim
The small net is set up behind his lookout location to prevent him from being silhouetted against the sky. The net with scrim is set up on the front of the car and the net with little to no scrim is set up on the back half of the car. One net with a small piece of scrim is shown in shots of Dog climbing into the back seat area so the rear seat wells are the apparent storage location for the nets. Presumably the throws the big nets in the car before he takes off, although here is no sign of him picking up the small net, skins, blanket, tripod and leather bags before he leaves. With the exception of the small net, these item are not at the camp when he goes through it on foot with the gas cans (last pic).

Been looking at the car's rear net a bit more and have a new theory: its one net (more modern textured net like the ones used at the oil compound-pic below) on top of, or under a regular square mesh net. In the sixth pic in this post, you can see the regular square mesh net over the quarter window and roof spoiler and on the lower half of the quarter panel. The other type of net is on the top of the quarter panel and wrapped over the right fuel tank. It has a texture more like a modern net. The bottom edge of this net is showing a shadow making it appear to have some thickness.

Hatchet
Can just make out the bottom of the hatchet head in the second to last pic. Appears to be a fairly long hatchet handle, 18” plus.

Shiny new props with short brass locks. Long brass lock on the tree.
Image

leg irons with long brass locks

Image

Small net with scrim. Appears to be a larger mesh than the car nets; 3"?
Image

Image

Two large (12' x 12'?) nets one with scrim. Be interesting to see how he gets it off the blower scoop with out hanging it up.

Abandoned camp with net but no other gear visible?

Interceptor gear Part 4: Bolt cutters, dashboard, spare blower drive belt, additional chain,

24” Boltcutters
We don’t get great pics of the bolt cutters when he bashes the rapist after the buggy crash, but they look like a 24 inch pair to me. These have a very similar profile with the extra black adjustment bolt: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1

Presumably the bolt cutters are stowed somewhere behind the driver's seat, since it does not show up in any other pics and we never see the area behind the driver's seat.

Image

Image

Dashboard
Shrunken/voodoo/tiki head
Saw discussion on this somewhere but can not remember where… Pics of a replica here: https://www.therpf.com/forums/threads/a ... on.266125/. , but I think its too large as the pipe clamp fits around the top of the head in movie pics.
Coils in pipe clamps screwed into the dashboard plus one or two empty pipe clamps depending on scene
Blue light mount.

tiki head with head band, and big dog tongue!
Image

Motorcraft coil
Image

Image

Aluminum bottles
There is a promo shot of the Feral Kid in the dog seat that shows two large aluminum bottles racked below the glove box. Looked in the movie for these bottles and did not see anything, but the interior of the car is in very deep shadow in those scenes, so they could be there.
Image

The top of a spare blower drive belt can be seen tucked behind the roll cage, silhouetted against the driver’s side rear window.
Additional chain
Double loop chain hanging from roll cage
Image

Tire inner tube
There is a tire inner tube just to the left of the blower belt, under the shelf, draped over the roll cage.

Interceptor gear part 5: Doors, machete, dog bone
Ammo pouches on driver’s door
Early Swedish Mauser pouches. Door strap is probably made from the belt from the ammo pouches as it has at least one punched hole in it.

Image

Was the can a continuity error?
Image

Machete on driver’s door
Appears to be a Australian military piece. Distinctive brass piece at the top of the sheath, grip shape and diamond pattern pretty much tell tell the story: https://www.ima-usa.com/products/origin ... 7932432453
Note checkered grip and hole in strap

Image

Photo of original car. Yes the machete was supposedly that rusty...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Dog seat has been discussed
Dog bone
This appears to be the bone that Dog holds in his mouth while watching the Gyro Captain https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1
Continuity problem between the two pics as the bone is flipped over from one pic to the next.

Interceptor gear part 6: shelf items and cooking pot.

The wire shelf appears to be shiny, unpainted raw steel in 2"/50mm square mesh
Image

On the rear shelf (passenger's side to driver’s side).
Dinki Di box.
Yup its Max’s food supply. Would like to find a good repro box. Have seen a few pics around.

Military straps
There are two military straps hooked to the wire shelf in the scenes where the Gyro Captain is chained into the car, but they are only in those scenes. We have chased them down to discover that they are the straps to Australian made versions of US M56 ammo pouches or longer Australian L1A1 SLR rifle pouches. In some shots there are no straps there but there is a cup. Ribs on the inside of the blower drive belt show clearly here too.

Image

Image

No straps, but there is a cup. This pic also shows what might be a blue colored wire spool and a canteen. I suspect that the straps were in one car and the cup was in the other one.
Image

Yellow gas bottle
Yellow gas bottle with valve and perhaps a hose down the side. Fire extinguisher? Does tend to move around a bit from scene to scene…
Looking at current Australian fire extinguisher color codes, yellow does not seem like it would be very effective for many typical car fires (gas, electrical). Maybe the codes have changed? Earlier fire extinguisher discussion was on the Mad Max: The Halls Of Justice FB page on November 4: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1633356450308483/
Yellow bottom showing top handle and hose.
Also shows what appears to be a canteen.

Image

Image

Image

Fire ext. handle. Still trying to figure out what the object to the the right of the handle is. Looks like it has a sewn edge.
Image

Blue wire spool has moved to the other side of the car in the pic with Nathan. Camo net to the right of Nathan.
Image

Small billycan/cook pot hanging from the Xroll cageX. Edit to coat hook. Capacity looks pretty small, one quart? Could be one of these, although these appear to have the same height and diameters, while Max’s appears taller than wide: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Elemental-6-Pi ... Swt5dbYCz5

Interceptor gear Part 7: Rear floor items
Rear floor
Camo net(s), tan quilted sleeping bag (?).
Image

Two panel black and white striped outdoor seat cushion/chaise cushion?
Hard to tell anything about it except that it does appear to have two pieces of piping in matching fabric so would be connected two panels.
Crowbar, striped cushion below the crowbar and between dog's legs, camo net with very little scrim and quilted sleeping bag (?).
Image

Air cleaner filter, crowbar and double coil chain lower left. Skins/leather bag on left?
Image

Enameled pot lid: Tea pot, cooking pot?
Image

Flashy blue police light! He still has it!

Interceptor gear Part 8: Crowbar, spare tire, bomb
Crowbar hanging from the shelf
Interesting piece with a second bend at the bottom, but no claw (and one broken tine on the clawed end). Thought I had seen double ended small crowbars, but sure can't find any pics now. Looks to be much lighter than a standard crowbar and about 18” long? Picked up a light crowbar (5/8” across the flats) and it seems to look the part compared to the movie pics pretty well, except for the lack of the second bend. Need to get the little forge fired up so I can bend it to match the movie version.

Bomb controller
Machete under car
Was trying to decide whether it was a knife or a machete, but the broken plastic and four rivets make me think its a machete. Have a cheap Brazilian machete that has a VERY similar handle. See pic below. No idea how it stays in its sheath on bumpy roads though…

Gear in the rear after being equipped at the compound, but before the bomb controlled was reinstalled.

Example with clear markings.

Spare tire
Spare rear tire (295mm wide) with original Mad Max movie style wheel, sometimes. Other times its the tire only. Wonder what happens when you put that big fat tire on the front…
Image

Spare with no wheel
Image

MM2/RW rear wheel
Image

MM1 rear wheel, unless that is somehow the front wheel. Note also the all of the wheel studs are intact and have no lug nuts, indicating that the rear wheels were removed before the explosion.
