Fury Road without CGI

Post by biolumen »

Someone put together a bunch of behind-the-scenes and pre-CGI clips from the film and set them to the soundtrack. Without the CGI, the movie simply looks more "real". More Road Warrior-ish. I like it, and wonder if it would have been better if Miller had gone with a more natural look to the movie.

This is a bonus feature from the Blu Ray.

I prefer the raw look as well, in fact it really pisses me off when I hear people saying that the only CG in Fury Road was used to remove the cables and stuff.

No, there's a metric shit ton of CGI in Fury Road, literally every shot has something replaced, removed and/or added. The skies, the background, the ground, the spinning wheels, Max's ear piece, color grading, fake flames, blood, harpoons, comped in cars, CGI cars and people, the entire Citadel, I could go on. The sentiment that 'we did this for real' basically functioned as a frame on top of which a whole lot of CG was added and sometimes it really shows. For example the moment Max wakes up from the crash - you can tell they did a crappy job at replacing the sky and comping Max in front of it because his hair are blurry around the edges.

Also, here's a cool video showing some CGI replacements but no color grading:

At 2:06 when the war-rig smashes into that car, that was brilliant.
I understand cgi is necessary when making movies like this, just wish they toned it down abit.

Thanks for the sharing these videos - they are fascinating.

When I first watched Fury Road and then read all the reports about the lack of cgi I started to wonder if there was something wrong with my eyes/screen. The movie seemed full of cgi work, some if it being quite clumsy.

But then I learned about how much had been done in the background that I'd missed and I was blown away by that.

The grading and backgrounds I like. Like others here, I just wished they'd toned it back. It dulls some of the action and sanitises the look in places. During the action sequences my mind was going. "Wow! Oh dear. Woah! Urgh. No way! Oh god, no way. Yes! Meh."

This isn't just a frustration I have with Fury Road, it's a frustration I have with the whole franchise. Mad Max & The Road Warrior are littered with these awkward moments which look really fake. Oddly enough, it's Thunderdome which seems to dodge this issue.

I personally like the colour grading used in Fury Road.
Also have no problems with the amount of CGI they used for the movie.

I remember seeing the first pictures from the production in Namibia
and I thought, oh man this looks really bleak!
Same with the first official (desaturated) photos.
I was flashed when the first Comic Con trailer came out and from
this point I was 100% on board.

To be honest, I don't really care much about that 'behind the scenes' stuff.
I'm not interested to get behind every secret and which particular scene
was enhanced by CG or not. Sometimes it destroys the whole Illusion.

I'm interested in the end product and therefore it's perfect for me.
