Hovercraft ? did it exist ?

Post by Artemis Flow »

A hovercraft was mentioned in the Art of Fury Road book as was the flying contraptions slated for the oily bog scene , we have since found out the flying machines were built but did they build the hovercraft ?
Look at this aerial shot we grabbed back in the day when the movie was in its infancy ....

I doubt it. That's probably a wind machine.

The hovercraft tribe/quicksand idea was just that - a very rudimentary idea Brendan McCarthy had somewhere between 97-98 and it was discarded before the first version of the movie. I really doubt it would survive until 2010 when those pictures were taken over Sydney. I'm actually really surprised the Rotoraider machines were built in the first place, but then again - Rotoraider scenes were boarded out fully, whereas the hovercraft/quicksand was just a very early idea, nothing more.

I do recall seeing concept artwork on here, it wasnt a hovercraft, but looked like a vehicle (4 wheels) with a huge fan at the back, possibly a paraglider type set up.
We are 100% snafu....

You mean this one?

Made by John Eaves, I think he sent this concept art to get the job on Fury Road who knows when.

Ask tehCal where he got his info from, safe to say it was legitimate.

The information I've seen is essentially a workshop schedule -- has what appears to be manufacturing and testing deadlines, as well as production names and (in some cases) nicknames or make/model in shorthand.

It lists this between the RockRider bikes and the Vuvalini bikes (which were called Vulvalini on the document):
RotoRaiders
RotoRaider #1/manufacture 91 218
RotoRaider #2/manufacture 92 219
It doesn't appear to have dates listed however so it could have possibly just been a planned build that never got started.

I love this! It just screams Thunderdome. A little over the top but I quite like the idea of a whole gang living on one vehicle.

Actually this is a bit more Waterworld than mad Max for some reason.

A mining truck armed and armored has been a concept in the tabletop gaming world for many years. :D

Star Wars author Aaron Allston (who passed away in February 2014) published in 1984 a car combat gaming supplement titled UltraForce. The module had a military fanatic (not unlike Immortan Joe) who had a heavily armed and armored mining truck.

The New Omaha Vehicular Association (NOVA), a Car Wars gaming group that has existed for over 25 years, has an article regarding "supertrucks" for Car Wars on its Web site. The article includes a great drawing (attached to this message) of an armed mining truck that was published in the rulebook of the Games Workshop miniatures game Dark Future.

Such a mining truck always reminds me of the 1983 movie "Warrior of the Lost World" with Donald Pleasence.
In this movie such a truck is used as an assault vehicle.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.
