If Fury Road Is So Good

Good pick, I really enjoyed Haywire.

Without doubt it's one of the less impressive chases from that era. It just surprised me in terms of filmmaking, editing, and immersion. It may be that, for some of us, we struggle to get involved in some newer movies because we're not used to how they are edited now.

For instance I loved the chase in Death Proof, but then that movie, despite using newer mobile cameras, was consciously cut to look like something from the 70's.

Maybe, I enjoy a mix of both TBH!

I'd be curious to know what you thought of the (brief) chase in Haywire. It's slow and simple, but very realistic ... I wanted more when I first saw it, but on reflection it's one of my favourite bits of film.

I so wanted to love Haywire. Female protag who does her own stunts. Brilliant car rig setup. Major kudos to them going the super-realistic route. Chase did nothing for me at the time, and I didn't finish the movie. That said, I do still reflect on it favourably because it was a bold choice where the execution seems to live up to the intent.

Fair enough, I can see why you'd feel that way - it's a *very* slow burn. TBH I felt underwhelmed the first time I watched it, but then I thought about it, rewatched it about a month later, and then got a lot more out of it second time around. The Ewan McGregor fight conclusion, and the final ending, are the two parts that really pull it together for me. Very much like the end of MM1, funnily enough ... which now I think about it is similarly paced over all

I really liked Haywire. Plot was a bit nonsensical and there were some sections that dragged, but Carano was a surprisingly good leading lady, the action was fantastic, and it was a Steven Soderbergh film so it was extremely well-filmed and well-produced.

As for the OP's kids, well, I'm yet to meet a single kid who likes MM1. Whereas all my friend's kids loved Fury Road and the ones who've seen MM2 seemed to enjoy it enough. Just sayin'.

I'm 30, and I'd be lying if I didn't admit that MM1 is my own personal least-favourite. Toecutter is the best villain in the series, absolutely, but god there's some cheese in that film. The soundtrack is absolute rubbish, the tone varies between near-dystopic and plainly silly 70s kitsch, and the film has some really, really boring stretches (pretty much anything not involving car combat or the Armalite gang menacing people).

I grew up with MM2, however, and it's always been my favourite... personal preference of course, but from the many discussions I've had with friends about MM, a lot of my generation seem to feel the same way. Whereas I'm mates with a lot of older revheads and rockers who swear by the first film and don't overly care for the others, because the original is an icon of their youth.

I consider Fury Road a return to form, and in some ways (world-building, production design, music, stuntwork) the pinnacle of the series.

so you're child is your gage of if a movie is good or not. Now one can debate the merits of the orginal star wars film a new hope but I think it's awesome and my son had no interest in it when he saw it as a child. my son is 14 years old now but he was 13 when I took him to see fury road in the theaters. often times he whispers quips to me to keep himself entertianed if the movie isn't exactly holding his attention. but during fury road there was not a peep from my son. nor could I bring myself to speak or even breath through out most of the film. this movie reminded me of why I love cinema in the first place and is the best film I've seen in theaters in years. it was well worth the ticket and blu-ray purchase.

I don't mind opinion peices because they can be interesting to just contemplate and then see if I feel like saying anything...but if this was a news article it would be laughed off the internet. My son often has good taste when it comes to films new and classical. but sometimes he isn't interested in other good franchises like the predator franchise. which is fine I am happy he's developing his own tastes and likes when it comes to cinema. but just cause he doesn't like the predator movies doesn't mean I suddenly have to question if they are good or not. this just seems an odd way to start a conversation.

Fury Road has grown on me a lot; first time I felt underwhelmed perhaps due to expectation.

I still think its not perfect and it's not THE definitive mad max movie. That film was made in 1981 and without it this site, and franchise would never exist.

mad max 2 achieves more with less resources than FR does with a mega budget. I actually prefer the action scenes of MM2 not just in relative terms but compared side to side.

Maybe I am alone in this but sometimes less is more.
