Query on Ford XB cars for possible film

Hi all,

I'm in the very early planning stages of a couple of short Mad Max-related films and am getting a feel for costs. Obviously vehicles are the most expensive things to get and top of the list is a Ford XB. The intent is to have a post-apocalypse former MFP pursuit car feature. This means the original colors will be faded if not gone and would look modified, not unlike the Interceptor.

Given I saw estimates from some that even the Interceptor would be generously sold at 25,000, what would I expect an XB to go for that was roadworthy and driveable? I have a total of one stunt in mind (obviously performed by someone who knows what they're doing) and intend no damage to the vehicle.

Any replies greatly welcome, public or private.

If you actually want to use and XB, I would recommend finding someone that would be willing rent/drive to a replica drive one for some scenes, then build a rough dummy one for stunt shots.

Definitely hire as coupes are not cheap let alone Interceptors. Would'nt get much change from $80,000 for a decent one.

Prestige Motor Gallery in Blakehurst (southern Sydney) regularly have XA-XC Falcons on the floor. Saw an XB coupe there a couple of months ago for around $60,000 but that would be negotiable. They currently have an XB sedan for $28,900. I would guess that car has issues. Check their website http://www.prestigemotorgallery.com.au

I'd always thought that to make a movie based on the MFP, all you'd have to do is put the word out via sites like this. There are replicas out there that I'm sure the owners wouldn't mind being used as film cars, as long as they weren't put in harm's way. Or the price was right.

My idea would be set post-Apocalypse, so the MFP car would have to not look pristine. Perhaps another installment could flash back to that time, but for what I have in mind, it would have to look dirty and customed, ala the Road Warrior Interceptor. I know people love their pristine MFP cars, but it wouldn't be appropriate.

Thank you for the information, though. Once I have some more details of my project in mind, I'd be curious to know if anyone's done any 'apocalyptic' work....

I'm guessing you're not up-to-date on how much a pristine one can go for. There are a few on carsales.com.au with sellers asking north of $50K. Of course that doesn't mean they'll get it, but they're game enough to ask.

There are also a couple under $10K. Obviously then you're ticking boxes on what can go wrong in a 40+ year old car.

That one at Prestige for instance is an ex-police car that's done over 377,000kms.

I guess you didnt see the XB Interceptor replica i built in my profile photo (which i have owned since 1994)...
Plus the other XB sedan in the back shed i have owned since 2008...
Or the fact ive been a Ford fan since Alan Moffat won Bathurst in the XC hardtop in 1977 (1/2 win) along with my signed picture from said Driver..

Please please please do tell me again about your prices you think mean a car is "pristine".... as opposed to be a shit heap with bog and chicken wire repairs?

The Dodge Daytona in 'Joe Dirt' was a pristine car that they made 'old an dshitty' by using 'car makeup'. i don't know what that was specifically, presumably some sort of water based paint that could be washed off once the movie was done.

If you actually want to use and XB, I would recommend finding someone that would be willing rent/drive to a replica drive one for some scenes, then build a rough dummy one for stunt shots.

This is probably going to be the easiest way to swing things if you want to crash through a sign or do small jumps.

since it's being used for a movie and not for normal driving, you could probably get away with a complete basket-case patched up just enough to do it's scenes.
