Fameleathers.com MFP jacket?

Post by MFP 6068 »

Unfortunately I missed out on an Abbyshot jacket years ago. For a while I've wanted to buy a SBL jacket and do the shoulder caps myself. In a futile effort to find an Abbyshot jacket on eBay, I found a jacket that looked pretty good from Fameleathers. It has decent shoulder caps and the leather looks good in the display photo. However... doing a further search for the same jacket from the same company, I've also seen jackets with really thin and floppy leather shoulder caps. And I mean floppy. As in, the center of the cap appears to be attached to the shoulder, but the outer edges float well above the coat. They even have rivets in them, but they do nothing to actually attach the stupid looking floppy things to the jacket. Curious, I emailed them about the plastic caps, and they replied saying that they can do either the floppy things (why in the world would anybody want them to?!) or the plastic ones. Turning to the Mad Max, costuming, and prop building communities for further information about this company has turned up nothing. Does anybody know anything about fameleathers.com, or even better, their MFP jacket with plastic shoulder caps?

EDIT: I also notice that the model pictured with the floppy shoulder caps has 3 pocket on it, but the model pictured with the plastic caps has the one pocket that it is supposed to have. The major thing that gives me a bad taste in my mouth is that their website has multiple angle pictures of the two different jackets and treating it as one. So, I guess if you order one you have to specify that you want the good jacket and not the crappy one?

My virus protection blocked the site, otherwise I would take a look. I'd bet money that fameleathers is just another small Pakistani operation that does a decent job marketing their shop but creates woefully inaccurate products with inconsistent quality and standards. There must be a reason most of them use leather for their caps. Think about the kind of investment they'd have to make to create a pair of plastic caps for the occasional customer. Proceed with caution. Remember: any returns will likely have to be sent back to Pakistan on your dime.

Yeah, pictures would probably help. As soon as you see them, you will completely understand "floppy". I've never seen anything like this before. It would have looked much better to just not have them at all.

Anyway, this is the jacket that I thought looked alright:

Then, there is this jacket:

Notice the two extra side pockets and the "floppy" shoulder caps? I have no idea what's going on there. And the big issue I have, is these are both examples of the "same jacket" on their page:

The first one I would be happy with. It may not be 100% SA, I don't know, but I would still be happy with it.

the shadier places steal this photo from abbyshot.

but looking at abbyshot's site now, they got rid of that picture, probably because shady people were stealing it to sell their piss poor jackets.

Alright, I was wondering about that. I too looked at Abbyshot to see if it was their jacket and saw different pictures. I will steer clear of this then.

just searching "mad max jacket" on ebay and i found one:

it's a shame.

honestly, if you're looking for not spending a whole lot the south beach leather jacket is good. search around for modifications to make it accurate and they are more than willing to do them for you. i ended up getting the plastic shoulder caps from abbyshot and putting them on my sbl jacket (just ask that they not put their shoulder caps on). SBL's jacket is also "thinner" compared to abbyshot so it's not as "hot"; from what i understand abbyshot's is made actually like a motorcycle jacket is.

That photo is indeed an Abbyshot jacket. Just do a reverse image search via Google or Tineye.com and you'll see it used to be on their site. It's pretty obvious it's an Abbyshot, though, from the nice caps and the flare cut. And yes, the Abbyshot is made in Canada and has an insulated liner.
