just watch the film "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" (1974) and they use the line

speeds expensive, how fast do you want to go?

just wondering whether this is where the sign

speed is just a question of money-how fast can you go? came from slightly modified of cause

or was it a saying in general useage

Couldn't find a general useage. I thought there may have been a tv commercial that used the term, I searched on youtube and google but nothing.

I think George Miller may have watched a lot of car chase movies before making Mad Max and took a piece from here and a piece from there. ;)

I saw something similar in a Speed Shop back in the late 70;s. 'Speed is just a question of money. We can make you as fast as your wallet can stand.'
"There are over 550 million smallarms in worldwide circulation. That's one weapon for every 12 people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11?"

"The Teutonic reputation for brutality is well founded. Their operas last for 3 or 4 days and they have no word for 'fluffy'."

Given how long the modified car scene had been going before the 70's, I would have thought a phrase like that would have been coined a lot earlier.

But you never know.

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is a damn good film though.
