Wait a second, do you mean there's a scene from MM3 that was possibly shown in the theaters but then edited out later? OR, Gecko's death could have been just in a picturebook? OR, Gecko's death could have been just in the Tina Turner music video? But NOBODY knows for sure?
What is going on here? This is madmaxmovies.com where anything and everything ever related to the mad max movies has been discussed in the most minutia of detail. I did see MM3: MMBT back in 1985 but I probably tuned out the 2nd half of the movie. Therefore, I gotta ask Peter or Biolumen or Uncle Entity or Bubba Fat or DGSimo or Nightwalker or MWFV8(probably my favorite username) or Chase Bansi or HUMVEE Driver or Foxtrot X-Ray or, appropriately SCREWLOOSE:
Was Gecko's death in the original theater release OR not?

Well as you well know it was 1985... so the fading memory does play tricks on you. But the first time I watched MM3 on TV I thought, there is a bit missing and couldn't place it. Few yrs ago I got the novel and read it and it was then the brain said hey what happened to Geckos death scene in the movie?? The fact that it appears on Tina Turners clip means it was filmed.

I had to chuckle at this. The moment Max's train of camels came into view I realized my hopes for the film were set way too high. Expecting a MM2-type beginning, my heart sank. Won't make that mistake again.
For me this is a strange thing too. I also do remember the dying scene of Gekko. But when I check every copy of MM3 I have, it never shows on either of them.
Then I must have seen it when it was aired on TV (but I can only remember Dutch television playing MM2 from time to time) or in the Tina Turner video clip.
I even tried youtube to find it (outside the music video) but with no avail.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.
Howdy all! Had to join the forum to put my two cents in. I also remember the Gecko death scene from the cinema back in the eighties, and I also remember more that I saw then that has been cut from any VHS/DVD version I have seen since. It involves a much longer scene at the beginning where Maxie is chasing his vehicle and camels on foot. I remember him chasing for a lot longer, and almost catches up (within a foot or two).
And I quote from the MMBTD novel: "..the driver ran on and on, the the back of the wagon barely beyond his outstretched hand now... One yard... half a yard... He reached out, straining with the last of his strength, the monkey's shrieks loud in his ears. Almost... Almost...The rear of the buggy began to pull away again..." etc etc.
That's describes the scene exactly as I remember it originally. I noticed it missing straight away the first time I saw it on Video.
Ok, I'm thinking that the following 3 scenes may have been released in the theaters:
1. Gecko's death
2. Max chasing his vehicle and camels(long version)
3. * Max crying after nightmare, realizing he's no better than the crooks he used to chase *
These 3 scenes may have been cut from subsequent versions to adjust the run-time to fit into a TV slot OR
Maybe Gecko's death(and #3 if it exists) was cut out to make the movie more family friendly for prime-time TV and later home video versions. After all they did go after a bigger audience by making the movie PG-13 instead of R..and home video was huge back in the 80's so they may have reduced the violence/death even further to go an even wider audience.
One question: Were there two versions of MM3 released in the theaters? One U.S. version and one International version?
* = Possibly this scene was never shot/never seen/never in any version(orig. release, TV version, VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, Streaming) of MM3.

When they first aired the movie on Italian TV, back in 1988 or so, I'm sure those scenes were not present.
As for the Theater release of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Gecko's death was not in it. A short part of that scene is only visible in Tina Turner's Video clip "We don't need another hero".
I could probably make it on my own, but I like you kids.

I'm thinking it's very possible Gecko's death scene was in at least one version of the original theatrical release. roadwarriormfp, mahenoguy, nightwalker, mickalope, have all posted in the last few days that they remember seeing Gecko die when they first saw MM3 at the theaters back in 1985.
Maybe there were two different theater releases? one for U.S. audiences and one for International audiences?

Whoa, how did I come to be mentioned in fine company?
In regards to the discussion...I don't remember it but then my first viewing of BTD was when I was a wee little lad in the 80s and I didn't really rematch and soak in all the details until I was much older so I'm afraid I'm of little help.
