Mel Gibson [actor]

"George Miller is very good. He doesn't think he is, but he is. He has his own way of dealing with [actors] --- which is perfectly fine as long as you can crack his code a little bit. Because the dominant force in him is as an artist and a filmmaker, not as an actor's director. He achieves performances through framing. He can do that so he can alter you somehow and it works even better.

"George is always coming out with little surprises and new things. And that's good because I know it's exciting to work with George because he has taken me with him. He's not selfish with his knowledge at all. It rubs off on you. There's a simplicity about him. I find the same thing in most people who are fairly brilliant at what they do. They have the knack of being able to undo the complexities, just focus on the basics, and build up from there. Rather than just clutter a basic thing with a lot of bullshit!

"George is also very adaptable, very willing to throw something away and start again. This is exciting, too. Because it's only in the practical assertion of filmmaking that you can really find out if something is working and how it works. You can't blindly plow through it and stick to some blueprint. You have to go with the flow of what's right, or what feels right. George is very good at doing that. That's courageous, and that's the mark of a true artist."

Dean Semler [cinematographer]

"[George Miller] is a very demanding director. It's not only a question of making every shot as good as it can be, but it's how good in every department --- costumes, performance, make-up and background action. There's not an area of frame that doesn't have some sort of detail in it that's necessary for the moment. He likes to work in cuts and you can virtually see his mind picking out the cream moments he cares about and will use.

"There's no such thing as a simple set-up with George, it always seems to grow into something, that by the time you've completed it, is so much better than was first thought possible. What could be a simple shot of an arrow going into an arm shot against a blue sky, George will shoot with the world breaking up in the background, if that's what is needed to make it that much better."
